Does this sound like a clutch or gearbox problem?

I've just completed a round trip to Cambridge (about 200 miles) and had started to notice a noise (a sort of zzzzzing noise) on most of the gears when accelerating mainly 1st 2nd and 5th on the way home. As I pull into my driveway I discover I can’t get reverse gear. Of course, I’m hoping this some sort of over heating problem from queuing on the M25 and everything will be fine in the morning, however we are talking TVR so it’s bound to be expensive!
I’ve searched for related topics and I’m not sure whether this sounds like clutch or gearbox can anyone identify this problem and/or give me some idea of cost. My Tuscan is just over 3 yrs old has 23k miles (from reading other posts looks like this is life span of a clutch/gear box).
Finally, I have always used the Kent dealership for the last 10 years of TVR ownership but they seem to have ceased to be a main dealer and it is difficult for them to source parts. Since my car is over 3 years old should I be looking at a specialist rather than a main dealer if so, who?
Any thoughts gratefully received.

I still have all of the gears (except reverse) I can't physically can't put it in reverse.
Can you clarify what test I need to do per your second question.

Did you hear a zzzzing noise on accelerating or just have trouble getting it in gear.

Mine was zzzziiinng the otherday after a long run which caused lots of salt to fly into the bellhousing which inturn , made the release bearing not return fully so it was still pressing the back plate. A small amount on spary grease on the shaft sorted it, but that does not explain no reverse.
Does the clutch feel soft, i.e loss of pressure in the system, and when you try and get a forward gear does the clutch bite right near the floor.
What does it sound like at idle with the clutch out, and much difference with it in?. ( in neutral).

It sounds more like the selector mechanism to me, to be honest. I don't know how it actually works on that specific gearbox so I couldn't advise on what to do, but the symptoms don't say "clutch" to me... is there a nylon bush on the bottom of the gear lever? (it would be inside the gaiter etc so not visible without dismantling).

No joy. Couldn't find the reverse 'slot' with the engine off and clutch down - tried fifth and down and nothing either.
So does that sound like clutch or gearbox?

Ok I understand what you want me to check. Had to park it outside someone else's house last night so haven't done any 'engine on' tests yet. Will try when I get home.

Had it gone into reverse without the engine running but not with the engine running that would have suggested the clutch was not disengaging properly - clutch problem.
The fact that makes no difference would suggest you have a gearbox/linkage problem.
Jo, do you recall any vibration from the gearstick along with the noise? I'd agree that it's likely a linkage/selector mechanism issue from the clues so far.
As for Indies, Austec near Gatwick, Leven in Essex not far from Dartford, APM in Liphook Hampshire are options, as well as TVRFix and David Batty in Surrey, and Chris (ex dealer) in Larkfield. I now you'll need a courtesy car and out of all those I only know that Austec have them and APM don't.
However, our local ex-dealer are still official servicing and parts, their supply problems have now gone away and things are changing for the better.

I second that - stick with your trusty indie. Dealer service will likely cost you more money, but not necessarily mean any better job is done.
