My new Chim 450...

ok ok this may be a bit of a newbie question so sorry in advance!

...on flooring it along my favourite A road in 3rd, 4th and 5th on the way to work I notice the revs rising rapidly then settling down again. This doesn't feel like clutch slip but is this really the rear wheels letting go in 5th on a dampish (but cold) road!?

Don't get any stinky clutch smell and it seems ok in 1st and 2nd. Just checking really as it's not covered by the warranty and I need to see the dealer now if it is the clutch.

Got a feeling the answer is either going to be or

Try it on a bend...that should prove it either way...

only spoofing, you usually feel some lateral movement if it's the wheels spinning

If in fifth, with warm tyres and a dry road, I might expect the worst.

Get it checked.

I'd put my money on as I think I may be heading for a £500 shell out myself

Ouch, how many miles has yours done? About what is the expected life for the clutch? Mine has done £48k.

42k... seems fine in low gear, but push it hard in 4th or 5th and it just feels odd... also pedal bite point is high!

er yes sorry about the random pound sign! Hmm, methinks a call to the dealer is required tomorrow. Just checked my warranty policy and the clutch centre plate is covered!

'feeling funny' in fourth gear sounds very familiar!

One way to check the clutch is to put the car in 3rd with the handbrake on and let the clutch out slowly. She should stall pretty quickly.

I had something similar a few weeks back (see posting), I could replicate mine by going on a quiet motorway and then in 3rd/4th got the car revving to about 3000 then just planted it, the revs just then went up a lot faster than you'd expect. Took it to the garage and i'm now £1100 lighter due to leaking gearbox and engine seals allowig oil to seep onto the clutch :-(

Now runs perfect.

Bevan.

Pull away firmly in second gear with a small amount of clutch slip, and abruptly let the clutch up fully. The clutch slip should stop immediately, and the engine revs should drop abruptly. If the engine drop gradually then the clutch is slipping. Make sure you keep the revs down and don't slip the clutch for long under power, because this puts a lot of heat into the clutch and will make it wear out that bit sooner.

Sounds like the clutch to me. Had to replace mine at around 48k miles. initially just slipped a little in top and then got worse slipping in 3rd and 4th as well. Not too expensive your local indie should be able to do it for around £500

Bugger, stalled it this morning in third gear with my foot on the brake. Didn't seem to be any clutch slip then. I have always experienced clutch stink in my other cars if the clutch is slipping but maybe it's true that I have oil on the clutch.

Will take it back to the dealer to get it fixed anyway just in case.

I test drove a car with 27K on the clock and full service history last week and the clutch was absolutely shot. Would slip in second gear under moderate acceleration. It had spent most of its life in the city. So clutches can go, if abused, very early on. Just my two penny worth.
