I need to take a look at a companys accounts. Its all above board but I want to find out how much they are spending on services and so forth.

The company is registered in the UK and there is also a charity which takes the profits from the account.

So the question is, how do I do it? Can I just ask companys house for the audited accounts?

I am a little green when it comes to this sort of thing!

Just go to www.companieshouse.gov.uk/WebCHeck/fastrack/ "Monday to Saturday 7.00am to 12 Midnight UK Time" and it is all available for immediate download (after paying the fee by credit / debit card).

For a fee you can get them from companies house if they are a limited company. There are many web sites which give the same data. If you have a "friend" which subscribes to such a web site, they can go on line for free.

You can always ask the company concerned for a set?

Register at www.companieshouse.co.uk which is completely free, then it is £1 for a full set of accounts, a 363 (report showing the full return including directors and shareholdings) is also £1. Credit cards are accepted, they will email back within a few minutes, then you will recieve a PDF scan of the return by email.

If the company is "small" (turnover under £5.2 million/less than 50 employees etc) it is allowed to file "Abbreviated Accounts" at Companies House. These only show a basic Balance Sheet and some restricted statutory disclosure notes. They do not show a proper Profit and Loss account with the kind of details you might want to see.

If you want to email me with the company's name I can get you as much as is publically available. Eric's right about the level of info a company is required to submit, I believe it has to be above three out of four criteria fot two consecutive years (or something). However, some smaller companies choose to file full accounts despite being below the level that they're required to do so.

OK thats guys. I paid my £2 and got all the stuff I could off the net. Not very juicy and only showed very basic stuff, which is a shame. No details of employees or cost spent over the year, just

Admin - - - - - £13,800 that sort of thing.

I wasnt after too detailed details, just things like total amount spent on salaries, cost of a new roof for the building, cost of training and so on.

costs like new roof won't be itemised unless the company is trying to draw attention to a specific thing which would then be outlined in the directors report for the year. generally though, such a disclosure would be rare.

You won't get that from any source....
