Seems like it's not far off. All this religious bullshit seems close enough to start it.

The whole thing's reminiscent of the WWI powder-keg. Lots of little events...single minded ideologies, failing superpowers, an arms race/standoff, misguided diplomacy and non-functioning transnational entities. All we need is a spark, and I'm willing to bet it's going to come in the form of Israel bombing the Iranian nuclear reactor.

If possible, would you boys stay out of this one. It's just that we're a bit close, and if someone bombs the hell out of you, we're gonna get a few lost planes dropping their load again and I dare say the bombs this time round will pack a bit more punch.

Thanks. We like being neutral .

And a pleasent place to holiday .

That's Scarey.I was some 3 miles away from a B-52 raid when I was in Nam.The earth actualy moved when the bombs hit.The Survey Team that inspected the Damage Said the area looked Extinct,as if nothing was ever there,as if nothing ever existed. There was hardly any Oxygen in the air.I beleive they can Carpet Bomb an Area 1/2 mile wide and 2 miles long with conventional bombs, with just 6 B52's.I can't even imagine what a Nuclear Payload would Destroy.

That must of been one frightening experience for a youngster, makes you wonder how they havent got 'Bin Hiden' yet with a bit of carpet bombing

Oh, if it's religious bullshit you want ...

On American television this month two new series.

1. A priest with a dysfuncional family and many parishioners has Jesus as a friend.
2. Lots of young girls in swim wear are asked to eat horrible things in humilation.

The first series has been cancelled before it aired.
The second series has been given a full season to run.

So ...

Deeply moral man who talks to god for guidance - censored!
Big breasted girls in bikinis eating pig's balls - approved!

And in a Christian country. Go figure.

It's a shame that TV always has to appeal to the lowest common denominator, i personally can't see what people find interesting in them

So that’s one square mile per flight?
251,825 (Area of Afghanistan in square miles) + 171,599 (Area of Iraq in square miles) = 423,424 (Number of sorties needed)

Now how many B52’s do we have and how fast can they be “turned around” while on the ground?

During the cold war both parties had a healthy respect for the term 'mutually assured destruction'

The problem now is that the potential waring factions believe that god (or Allah or whatever) is on their side and to die for the cause is an honour.

You can't fight an enemy like that.

The current B-52s (H Models) carry nothing like the bomb load of the versions (D and F Models) used in the Vietnam War. The Ds and Fs were able to carry up to 80,000 lbs of "iron" bombs. I think the H is limited to about 30,000 lbs.

Why's that, Eric?

Yes, but they involve total strangers trying to kill you, is this not a problem?

In the mid 1960s, B-52Ds and Fs were given what was called the "Big Belly" modification to increase their bomb loads - specifically for use in South East Asia. Later versions (the G and H) were not modified as they were retained in their original role as strategic nuclear bombers.

Only the Hs now remain in service and they have undergone extensive modifications and upgrades in the intervening 40 years which, whilst improving the capability of the aircraft and its systems, have tended to reduce the carrying capacity too.

not when my dad is bigger than theirs

My gang usually turn up to a war with reasonable kit and weapons, unlike the poor unfortunates we have mullered over the last couple of decades who turn up in scabby gear and crap kit......this does give you a sense of confidence

and I am a fatalist.......if your numbers up, then your gonna get it regardless of whether you are in Afghanistan or Cromer

On balance, I'd prefer not to have another world war. However, trying to be ever the optimist, I think we'd be on the winning side (again). If I was a betting man, my money would be on The USA, Israel and The UK (and possibly Australia, France and one or two others) beating Iran and one or two middle east allies. In fact it would be a bit 'one sided'.

That said, I still reckon our politicians should 'jaw jaw' not 'war war' - as Churchill said!
