Extnd. Opening Hours - less violence (first figures)
Discussion
They've been talking about an 11% decrease in violent crime.
But, this was at the same time that the police got extra money (£2.5m) to help prevent problems. That has now been spent.
Remeber that these are statistics. We all know what the govt can do with them and a little creative spin.
That said, I'm of the opinion that little will get worse. I don't subscribe to the Daily Wail's view of an imminent Soddom & Gommorah because the local stays open till midnight...

It seems the low figures are partly due to increased prescence of police on the street for the initial phase of the new legislation. The Home Office freed up additional funds to pay for this. These funds have now expired and policing levels are now down to their normal levels. We will need to give this new situation at least a year to know its true impact on society.

Sketchy details at first but official figures are due to be released later today..
Since the new revised opening hours came into play, there has been a reported 5% downturn in drink related violence.

I'd guess that they are simply re-classifying the definition of a violent crime to make it less.
Or it's true. A chap who works here lives in Brighton and said just the other day how it's changed the place for the better - much less aggro, less pissheads, more relaxed nights out.
It works on the continent - I see no reason for it not to work here.

much nicer to sit and have a relaxed drink and leave when you want than be pushed out at 11:15pm with all the pissheads who are up for troubleI could always see the point of not chucking everyone out at the same time to fight over the kebabs and taxis.
I dunno if it will do anything to turn around the British culture of going out to get drunk to a more continental one of going out to have a drink.
I still wouldn't bother going to a city centre on a Friday night.

While never strictly speaking a doubter, I am forced to ask myself if I am prepared to believe government figures that point out what a good job they've done.
But these figures are supposedly from an independent source.

I personally believe any difference the new laws make will depend entirely on what newspaper you read
