I had a go last night in a 2.4JTDm Lusso and some aspects were very impressive - comfort, ride quality, the way it put it's power down, build quality, thought the dash was great (the silver is real metal, not painted plastic! ) and it looked very imposing.

However...

It felt like a big luxo barge. It was so heavy. It drove and felt just like I would imagine a "nice" middle range 5 series would. Very good, very competent, very efficient which will appeal to the What Car readers, but it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.

And that centre info display is ridiculous. Why do I need a bright red thing slap bang between the main dials telling me what day of the week it is!!!!??? (Don't answer that ). Maybe the dimmer would turn it down?

I think it was £24,500, but I might be wrong.

There is no Veloce or Ti version at the minute and personally I think they need one. You can't even get the sports seats as an option, and if you look down the options lists, everything is luxury based and not sports based. It almost seems more like a replacement for the 166!!

The dealer was hoping for the Brera in April and the Sportwagon in August so at least there's plenty going on but I'll be hanging on for a while.

I'm going to test drive one soon, did it have the semi perminant 4x4 or is that only on the V6?

This one was front wheel drive.
The Q4 is coming soon and should be available on the 2.4 as well as the V6, but it is a PERMANENT four wheel drive system with three diffs and under normal conditions sends slightly more power to the REAR than the front!

It's funny you should say it's like a replacement for the 166. I've always thought that too. It looks like a 166, it definitely seems to have a more luxury bias than the 156, which I always considered to be a sports car.

I know.

I reckon my dream spec of Sportwagon, 2.4 JTD, and Q4 will be about 2.5 tonnes.

Just been into our local Alfa dealers to have a nose.
They have a 159 2.4 JTD M (200BHP) in the showroom in Silver. Not sure about it's bum as the boot line is quite high, but front is gorgeous. Sitting in it it feels very much the sadly missed 156 SW that I had. According to a quick chat to the service manager & senior Alfa mechanic their will be Auto & Selespeed versions & the sportwagon is 2ish months away.
Yup I want one, wife muttered abount selling TR7 & using as a deposit on a shiney new 159.... Umm it's a thought.
