As if we don't pay enough taxes......
Discussion
Some liberal think tank or other has floated the idea that UK households should pay extra taxes to force more environmental behaviour.
Waste water , pay tax (guessthe water companies will be hit hard then!)
Use normal light bulbs, get your hand in your wallet.
Throw too much stuff away, bend over Gordon's goons will be along in a moment.
Even Wogan this morning said "how can we pay MORE taxes?"
no web link will add one later.

God if tories can't get in next time they never will.
All they need to do is offer a simple, honest taxation policy.
Cut back on public sector fatcat salaries and pensions, reduce pikey benefits and handouts.
Every person in the uk who dares to work hard or save for their future would be at last be better off.

year upon year since I have been old enough to notice I have watched as my lifestyle has been squeezed and generally the quality diminishing in terms of taxing, the services I actually use, and in terms of staff benefits. I cannot think of one positive that has worked in my favour courtesy of the government. You could possibly offer up low interest rates as a borrower (mortgage) rather than a saver, but then this is offset against the house price inflation that necessitates having a bigger mortgage and then the risk that if interest rates rise it will be even tougher financially. I am not wanting to start a row over the control politics may or may not have over any certain areas of my lifestyle, just a general observation of the benefits that I have seen being an average run of the mill tax paying non-public sector worker.

on the BBC this morning they were saying if you recycle, and are energy efficient, your council tax will go down, but if you don't recycle, and waste water and electricity, it would go up a bit.
Typical Labour reaction to increase tax and introduce more bureacratic control to solve any problem.
They should spend the billions wasted on hideous windfarms on fiscal incentives to make homes more energy efficient ..... that would mean big subsidies for insulation , solar power, heat pumps etc.
(Windfarms only generate 1% of total energy needs if that .... a total non- soluton if ever there was one.)
Packaging waste should be tackled via the manufacturers / legislation ..... then it wouldn't need to be thrown away in the first place.............. dohhhhh !

I think the most stupid idea is paying to have your car taken away. Then they wonder why so many cars are dumped. Same with fridges. Next will be old computers cluttering the roadside.
Remember the incentive for using clearer Unleaded fuel? If we all go LPG same will happen.
When I bought an apartment around 6 - 7 years ago I went to Comet to buy a fridge freezer. They had some government backed scheme on whereby if you bought the most efficient you would get a refund of about £50 or something. Being younger and having just bought a flat, I was desperately trying to save money in all furnishings so I ordered one of these environmently friendly ones because it was cheaper. However, the deal was a p/x so to get the refund I had to have an old fridge for them to take away! So if I buy environmentally friendly at the outset I get no discount....er. Soon sorted with a van and an eye for spotting dumped fridges around the city. At least, I think it was dumped....
The Comet delivery man was rather surprised to carry up the fridge freezer to the flat only to have to take the part exchange out of the back of the van downstairs

Believe the term is stagflation, nothing is happening now, apart from what there is - is just getting more expensive
When interest rates were high in the past wasn't this to control business, due to high economic growth? Whilst people sometimes suffered they should have had high pay rises to offset interest rates?
I really do wonder if there will be a meltdown in society as once young people grow out of the novelty of cheap Chinese imported electronic goods and face the reality that they will struggle on affording accomodation and having to support an ageing population, esp the public section pension burden... All fun!
Why focus on consumers, most of the time we have little choice.
Where I can be cleaner and greener I am, but thats as far as I can go.
I can't collect my roof water, or so Yorkshire Water says, so I pay to waste what they drain away and re-pump at great expense to water my garden or wash my car!?
The recycling bin is once a month and doesn't cover enough stuff. Honestly collect it more often and add various bins, I'm all up for it!
Supermarket waste is the big one, industry and commerce. Where do they ever feel the heat? If they had 5% of their profit eaten up for being un ecological they'd soon sort it out or prices would go up. Either way the consumer would either get a greener product, or pay more for one that isn't!
Some dumb lentilist whingers thinking the people in their homes are always the ones to blame, when it's not the way we live at home, it's our consumer habits, and how consumer providers (ie, industry and commerce) waste!

I'd love to opt out of paying, "On principle":
my TV licence,
vehicle excise duty,
or stamp duty.
Unfortunately, it never works out like that for people like myself.
Fu****g Communists.

Our council has cut back on refuse collection in order to "promote" recycling, without actually putting any extra effort into recycling
Net result: lots of packaging that they won't recycle and won't take away if your bin's already full! Typical government attitude: all stick and no carrot.

I was about 18 when the Poll Tax was introduced. Dutifully paid it out of my pittiful earnings whilst many contemporaries simply refused. Eventually it was abolished and nobody I know was chased for the arrears. Did I feel like I'd been mugged?
As per the other thread, it was the fairest scheme going...
I had a rant on another thread some time ago about our council recycling.
We were all given two plastic boxes, one for paper, cloth cardboard, and another for plastic, cans. Vehicle collects every week.
The standard wheely bin collection was cut to fortnightly.
THEN they decide that as the vehicles they have bought won't "fit" the system which the county council has adopted, all these special recycling vehicles will be replaced with other vehicles, all the plastic boxes will be scrapped and replaced by a second wheely bin.

Bang on the money.
I take it you've had the story of Plotloss's mate taking affirmative action on this very point? It's just awesome, and quite inspiring - if only I had to balls to do the same
