In the last few days the temperature read out on my 2001 S2 has been rising much quicker than normal. Yesterday it soared past 100 and when the fan came on, nothing happened, continuing up to 113 degrees, when it started to flash. This hasn't happened before. My car's just been serviced and coolant looks ok. any ideas....??

Suggest you have a word with your local specialist mate. Could be knackered fan etc. or could be onset of HGF I guess. Check your oil - any moisture getting in? If you have coolant in the oil you have a problem.

Someone more knowledgeable will come along shortly...

when it keeps on rising it could be a non working fan or...a bad valve in the system that stucks(not open) don't know the name in English but the valve that controls the coolant in your engine and when thats hot it opens so it can cool in the system(radiator) when that one stays closed or not open far anough the heat can't be coold anough and will rise even in cold weather...
when it happens when you drive best open the heater valve and try to cool a bit by that way...sometimes it helps a bit only for need...! let it check by a garage or feel the hoses when engine is hot and hoses on front stay to cool...you have that problem...?

i can hear the fan coming on, it's just that it seems to have no effect at cooling it down. could this be a symptom of upcoming HGF...??

the fan come's on, so the water is pumping around? or is your water to low to pump around! does the heater in the car still blows hot air?? when not and engine is hot, your coolant level is low, but you told its normal? so then think of someting worse... maybe that HFG thing...sadly I can't help you from here...
>>check the level of the coolant...
>>Check if the water is pumping around!
>>check if both? fans working(do you have 2?)
>>does the heater work when engine is hot? or does it blow cool air instead of hot?
When all the above is fine, and problem is still there go to a garage or tech-man
