The wide flat grey things that hand off bridges on motorways. Are they cameras, speed cameras or what?

Traffic Master - they are traffic density counters.

Anyone in London see a White van with a camera on it's roof approaching Soutwark Tube station on 'The Cut' what the hell is that.

I know - I did read the thread first. They are associated to the traffic master network and are primarily used to count traffic density. Just becuase they do not appear on the TM website, does not mean they are not connected with TM.

Going up the M6 (north of Lancaster) on Saturday neet, I kept seeing what looked like those old, mini BSkyB 'squaerials' on poles, facing up to the sky, albeit at an angle - what the hell are these, anybody?

If they are facing south then they are probably solar cells to power pollution monitoring kit. If they face any other way - god knows

Could be part of a telematics trial, but I don't know for certain.

Around the south side of the M25, and on the M4 and M3 there are three boxes together on a large board supported by the gantry... these are from an abandoned telematics project run a few years ago...

To reply to Woz's original question.......if you're referring to the flat dark panels about the size of a large envelope accompanied by a cameras looking at all three lanes of a motorway, I believe these are number recognition technology looking for tax dodgers (as Podie said) and possibly providing other law enforcement opportunities too. I don't believe they record the speed of vehicles.

I've specifically seen some at the top end of the M40 and towards the Brum end of the M54.

Thanks folks.

One other question. On the A17 near Cranwell airfield there are two long poles at either side of the road. On the top of each there is a short thin tube pointing at each other. Any ideas what this is?
