Radio 1 - is it corrupt?
Discussion
It's not corrupt, its just crap, I'm sure their target audience gets lower, age and IQ wise every year - what was the headlines yesterday, 'the biggest ever survey on bulimia (sp??), and what is being done to help them!!!
It seems to now be run with over-zealous PC-types, and it comes across as a local school radio station, any modicum of interest I had in R1 stopped the moment John Peel passed away.

I listen to the Radio only in the car on the way home from work, for that function (ie, not paying much attention) radio 1 is fine. So by default pretty much the only show I listen to is Scott Mills at drivetime, because its better than any of the other drive time shows. And I only really listen to that for chappers.... IMHO the guy is a comedy genius, his sports news is always littered with his own personal comments, and his wind up calls are superb (although how some people havent twigged is beyond me
). Mills has to be the most gullable guy on the planet, but Chappers is quality. Hell even Laura (the news girl) was funny last night when she helped with a wind up call. In fact if i tune in and chappers has a day off then the radio goes off too. Apart from that most mainstream radio shows/stations suck IMHO.
ps. the sometimes have Comedy Dave (from the Breakfast show) and chappers team up to stand in for DJ's on holiday. Now that is a funny show.

Absoblimminlutely.
I had this conversation only yesterday with someone. How can 'presenters' in their 30's spout on in all earnestness on topics that only matter to a 13 year old like it actually matters to them too? Been trundling round the country last two days resigning myself to Five Live and Talk Sport on MW on the grounds that FM had only Radio 1 or various crappy Radio Local stations to offer. That woman who comes on at 10:00 should be taken out and shot. Never could the words "grow up" be more appropriately directed.
Last weekend, I was up and in the car at an hour none of us should ever see on a Sunday and caught the last 45mins or so of "The Blue Room". It was a brilliant diversion from the inane Spoony that followed. An eclectic selection of music which has led to me buying a couple of CDs I'd never heard of this week. It reminded me a little of being driven home listening to John Peel in a mate's car after several hours in the pub.

I'm 28 years old and a huge music fan, so I should like Radio 1, but I don't.. I find the DJs either complete jerks (Zane Low or Westwood) or arrogant and totally unfunny (Chris Moyles or Scott Mills). I like Jo Whiley, she's lovely in fact, but that's about it. As for the new music shows - have you heard their music? absolute rubbish. My band tried to send a demo in recently and we had to send it to the new music show (no-one else accepts demos at R1). We listened to the DJ's top ten new tracks. Number one started with a muffled guitar and a guy croaking over the top - number two seemed to be the same guiitar with a guy who simply couldn't sing - it was utter rubbish. I see lots of new acts around the place, and most are far far better than that - in fact I'd walk out if one of those 'new acts' came on at a live music venue.
As for the corruption, I don't know about other DJ's, but I've seen Judge Jules play live a few times, and the music he 'has' to play during the live broadcast is fairly so-so. As soon as we go off air his track choice changes totally and the night gets better and better. He has his fingers in a few pies with regard to record companies, and I can say for sure that that affects his airplay.

I too love music, all kinds from all eras, thats why I cannot listen to R1, as a whole, now. The DJs (or presenters, as they're now called
) used to be more edgy, I even remember jane Middlemiss slagging off a record she 'had' to air,it was that bints new single from that 'fly on the wall' docusoap about a shopping mall, or similar, and she went mad, stating that "there are a lot of really talented bands out there who struggle to get airplay, and yet some 'checkout girl' gets a contract because she been on the TV with no problem at all!"
Can you see any mainstrean DJs saying that now?

I remember that. As a member of a band struggling to get noticed, and also as someone who has heard many good, but unsigned bands, I can wholeheartedly agree! Another thing that I miss is the opportunity to discover new bands - R1 only seem to play music that is 'fashionable' or 'cool' - what about good music that someone like myself might actually want to listen to? For instance, my ex really got me into The Editors after she heard them playing support to Franz Ferdinand at a gig in her home town. It was ages before I got to hear them on R1.chris watton said:

Mark and Lard used to slag off the playlist endlessly (and amusingly, Arse Kelly anyone) and look what happened to them. Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
