I don't use them but know people who do... isn't it just a bit of web space and an email account?

I guess it depends on how you use your computer.
If you basically work on your todd, you get the facility to back up data and sync major elements (e.g. Address book)
You get a simple system to produce web pages, including features like galleries directly from iPhoto.
You get an account to use iChat

If you travel or work in a group, you can maintain data on your iDisk, either to pick up an another computer or to publish to colleagues (with a password access). You can publish your calendar.

So your best bet is to browse the .Mac site and decide which features you will use.

I use mine for email, and hosting pictures/music files. I also back up my calendars and address book to it (so I can view them over the net). The backup utility that you get free with it is very good, and I use that to backup my files to a removable USB2 disk.
I have used the aliases before for doing net stuff. It's great as you can set up one alias, use it only once then either delete it, or wait and see what spam comes. So far its proved that MachineMart have yet to sell my email address to viagra pushers.

I've had one for nearly 4 years. Does a bit of everything - mail, webspace, storage (iDisk), backup etc

One quite cool thing is the email aliases. You can create (up to 10 i think) email aliases that protect your actual email address so, for instance, you can have an alias for all your online shopping etc. which gets mapped back to your proper address but your proper address is never revealed -pretty good spam defence.

Err, i'm not sure i explained that too well. Have a read up.
