Trouble slowing down!!
Discussion
hope you guys dont mind me posting questions after the recent arguments we have had.
really could do with ure advice.
as you know, i bought my s1 exige last sunday, and find the brakes very unresponsive!! push the pedal but feels as if nothing happens!! is this normal, cos i would have thought a car with such performance would have had the ability to stop pretty quickly!!
i will post the piccys of my car this w/e, cheers guys and i hope for a smooth relationship with you guys from now on!!

You're probably not used to no servos on the brakes. Takes a while to get used to them. Once you've got it, you'll be face planting the windscreen
so would i be correct in saying it is possible to do an emergency stop then?? or is stoppin not as sharp even when used to them?? just think its important to know these things!! did read the manual but couldnt find any info

No wonder, I didn't realise you could get an exige replica kit for the TT

Seriously, congrats on going through with it, I was in a similar position to you just under a year ago. Still now i love the car more EVERY time i drive it. With it being the type of car it is you learn to drive the car better, faster and safer everytime you go out. You wont regret buying it its the best purchase i ever made, just be careful this time of year, its easy to get carried away.

Thats very observant of you noticin my other post regardin the audi. that was a query for my brothers audi.
cheers for the advice. guess time will rectify the problem.
cheers guys
when everything is cheked and fresh good brake fluid is added and the brake pads have no glace effect...it should be fine...check when they refresd it because it might be track used a lot...
Hope its only a getting used to it, but the brakes have to be good, and I gues you have tryd it a bit harder yet?
cheers

was going to try it 2nite but the weather here is pouring down, so gonna wait for a dry day and try it then. hope all is well!!
Safe thougt of you! better wait indeed for trusty circomstances and a clear road for the distance you use, w ewill here it 2morrow then when wether alouds...
You'll quickly get used to the brakes without servo assist.
you'll get some exercise and get a lot better feeling with the brakes at the same time
If it hadn't been for my seatbelt I would have been thrown out the windscreen in my Honda Civic after the first ride in my Elise (I stepped on the brake like I did in the 'liz) .
And the steering felt like it was connected with a rubberband or something compared to the 'liz.
(impatiently waiting for the snow to melt and the salt to get off the roads )

TW,
Sounds like it might be worth checking disks and pads.
A combination af worn disks, pads and old brake fluid will make for very poor brakes!
My IIIs was like this when I bought it, but the guy told me it need new disks and pads.
Changed at the earliest opportunity to ECB turbo grooves and Mintex 1144's (good value / performance combo).
Brakes transformed. As others have said, you still need to stamp on the pedal but the modulation is great. Best brakes of any car I've ever driven.
(Worst - E reg mini city, drum brakes all round and modded 1275 engine
)
Having driven old minis I am used to the lack of servo, but my other half finds it a bit un-nerving!
Get them sorted asap mate - not worth taking any risks with such a quick motor!
Dunc

Once you get used to the brakes, you may find you need some pads with extra initial bite to give you that little bit extra confidence. Suggest Pagid RS42's www.elise-shop.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=9&zenid=9460d8702beb6535a1b1ae3765e71a99
Congratulations on your purchase
I haven't heard this since, but at the time of launch (1996) the S1 Elise was said to stop quicker than almost anything on the road. Certainly all the Elises I've ever driven have had really good brakes that inspire huge confidence. If you're used to servo brakes, then you just need to get used to pushing harder - you'll end up preferring them to servo brakes, I assure you! I'm confident that you'll be more than happy with the brakes once you have adjusted.

Did you get the car checked over before you bought it by someone who know's what they're looking at? Or are there records in the service history of how long ago the pads, disks & fluids were changed?
This should give you an idea if indeed you do need to spend the 800 or so quid it will cost you to replace everything all round or if it's just you getting used to an un-servoed car.

Hi
It is also worth checking what pads you have, I have pagid track pads on and they arn't good until they are warmed up fully, but then they are amazing! But compared to my RS Focus they are so differant! You do have to push hard but they never lock up and are fantasic once you get used to them.
P.S you may want to get on to www.exiges.com loads of great info and help on there!

S1 Exige mmmmmmm
I know brake pads have been done to death - so anyway ...
I took my car to Westovers when some rather spirited driving showed up a brake rattle when hot. I got severely told off by Andy Bennet (ex Nigel Mansell, ex Le Mans works spanner man) for running EBC Greenstuff. He said it is a down grade from the OEM which in his opinion are the best all round for the elise on the road.
The only alternative he would accept for road/track would be a pad for harder driving = Pagid RS4-2 this is a quick heating pad for short races so is ok for the road but he said it will eat through disks a lot quicker. Track pads will only work when up to temp so you want to check as this sounds likely for you but not suitable.
BTW my rattle is because with the cross drilled discs, the pad jiggles up and down - a second set of rubber anti rattles would help but as it's neither dangerous nor in his opinion will affect my braking I am going to keep them on until both discs and pads need changing late in the year (maybe new year).
And the brakes are v.good.
