Shiite muslims and Sunni muslims having been knocking chunks out of each other since time immemorial. It isn't our job to try to make them change their behaviour.

It just makes me think that Monty Python had religious fanatics down to a tee in the Life of Brian.

I wonder (am not sure at all though..) if this is any different to the hooligans who fight each other at football matches, If you look closely at the sheer hate on their faces as they're laying into 'Da Enemy', they looked so full of anger, I do wonder if they had a bomb to hand, would they use it?
Not the best example, I know, but I'm always amazed at the damage we can cause to each other, because they're 'in a different gang'

I think a quote I saw the other day (could have been on PH actually) of someone pointing out that Islam started around 600 years after Christianity, and if you look at parallels between how Christianity was 600 years ago (fanaticism, Protestants vs. Catholics, general appalling behaviour in the name of religion) and how Islam is now, it would appear that Islam is probably where Christianity was in the 1400's.

Still, never mind though. By that reasoning we've got the beginning of the Islamic equivalent of the Spainish Inquisition to look forward to in about 70 years...and this time we will be expecting it!

I can't help but disagree, because by virtue of the same "it's not our problem" approach if it's considered perfectly valid to slaughter other muslims in the name of islam then what difference is there to slaughtering non-muslims? Do we just turn a blind eye to it until it happens in Bradford or Birmingham? And what about people caught in the crossfire?

This didn't happen in Bradford or Birmingham, it happened in Pakistan. It has been happening in Pakistan for hundreds of years and, despite what you might think, is likely to continue to happen in Pakistan for hundreds of years to come. What do you suggest - sending an expeditionary force over there to ask them all to be nice to each other?

None. Common sense does not seem to be part of the genetic makeup of that part of the world. We're best off staying as far as possible from them as we can, they aint worth our effort, they aren't interested in helping themselves let alone having somebody else help them.

If that's the case then why don't we just cut out the middle man and disinfect the place with the aid of a few nukes? It's the only way to be sure.

The problem must come down to education, if these people had a access to a good education instead of a adhoc religious one which seems to permeate the poorer islamic countries then maybe they'll be able to learn some common sense and maturity.

Probably a fair bit...lets send Gerry Adams and Ian Paisley out there! Exactly the same issue, just with even less restraint!

What makes you think that they will perceive an education that teaches tolerance "good"?

This sort of stuff has been going on for centuries and will continue to do so. And all because some people can't progress beyond "My invisible friend is better than your invisible friend."
