Can anyone advise whether the cigarette lighter attachment available for the battery conditioner actually charges the battery or acts simply as a charge state confirmation.

I cannot see how a permanent live can channel through a charge to the battery using this format, when the standard connections attach directly to the battery.

Consequently is this a worthwhile option ?

The cigarette socket will work on any car as long as it is live when the vehicle ignition is off and the current you supply does not exceed the rating for the lighter-usually about 12-15amps. I believe the Chim lighter socket is permanently live.

Yup, lighter socket is always live and I have kept my battery topped up through it for the last 2 years. Dead simple and you have to disconnect to get in the car, so you won't forget it!

Have used mine successfully for a couple of years (apart from the time somebody thought it looked very appealing and expensive, so decided to do £100 worth of damage and nick it)- otherwise well worth it, and it does work. Have never had a flat battery despite leaving it for 5 weeks once.

As others have said, it works perfectly. I use one on my 1999 car, where the cigarette lighter is always live, irrespective of the ignition.

Because of this, what you are seeing IS a direct connection to the battery, via a fuse (probably 15A or so). The cigarette lighter circuit in normal use carries a much greater current (around 10A) than that supplied by the charger, so it's completely safe too.

Thanks everyone - you've more than confirmed my query. I'll be ordering one pronto as it seems more convenient than messing around in the footwell, particularly in view of my narrow garage.

Yeap, once you have used an Accumate and the lighter socket you will shake your head in disbelif when people start faffing around in the footwell with crocodile clips

Mine doesn't either. It depends on the usual TVR build criteria (day of the week, mood of the electrician, etc.)

Mine works with the ignition off and it has even brought the battery back from Flat, which i though was pretty inpressive, that took a couple of days mind, but I wasnt in a rush

The difference Rich... I dunno maybe just the name.

Go to Accumate/Optimate site and there is an explanation

www.accumate.co.uk/OptiAccuMateComparison.htm

Basically Accumate's more powerful
