And at Brands last week I pulled the 100-400 out of the bag, took off the lens cap and lots of little bits of glass fell out. Boy was I relieved when I saw it was only the filter!
Martin.
best/only reason for keeping a UV filter on a lens all the time
Why? Place a thin, fragile piece of glass on the front so it can somehow mysteriously break behind the lens cap and hopefully the broken bits can scratch the front element of your expensive lens?

If it makes you feel better, I've got a bent pin in the card reader in my 300D. Bizarrly two of my CF cards still work and two don't, I've been using it like this for months now!
What the hell were you using as a tripod Ross!

Blimey, I have an 055 and I can't imagine it toppling over unless maybe you had the legs too close together?
I nearly had a similar thing at the last wedding I did. Camera + 70-200 f2.8 + flash were on a Cullman tripod set up on a table with one section of the legs extended. Stable you'd think. Until the head suddenly subsided under the weight of the lens and the momentum was sufficient to send the C of G outide the tripod.
I was about six feet away when I heard the soft 'clonk' (alert as mothers are to babies crying). I glanced round to see the tripod + camera roughly horizontal and heading over the edge of the table earthwards. I was never known at school for my cricket fielding abilities but somehow I crossed that six feet in about 0.1 sec and caught it in time...
Had 2 close calls with my D50 since getting it in December.
First one was at my folks house. They were away for a bit so Ichecked in on the house and cat, noticed that Linlithgow palace looked superb all lit up on a clear night so i set the camera up on one of those bendy tripods outside the upstairs bedroom window on a ledge. Next thing a flash and blur as hitherto unseen cat made a leap out the window towards the camera. Fortunately I caught the camera and the cat stayed out of my way.
second one was doing shots for a night club and as I made my way across the club I felt the camera strap go light, instinct saved the day and i managed to catch the camera with my foot behind me (wish someone got a shot of that).

because the filter often takes the brunt of the impact. ive had it happen to me, and ive heard of it happening to other people as well. the time it happened to me i dropped a lens onto concrete and the filter smashed, but no damage to the lens. i'm positive that wouldnt have been the case if it had been filterless.
I presume the tripod was set up correctly
The manfrotto 055 is a serious bit of kit which shouldn't topple with the weight of the 20d is it's set up with a leg positioned to the front of the camera. I've only ever seen tripods topple when a leg is set to the back of the camera and the lens weight has lifted the back leg off the ground.
Hope it doesn't work out to be too expensive
