I'm about the change the oil on my 156 V6 for the first time. Its a pretty high mileage car (87k) but really doest get used a huge amount these days.

Would anyone recommend any particular oil or shall I just go to halfords and ask the nearest spotty kid what their book recommends....and no doubt get flogged halfords own?

Also, is it any advantage in getting an Alfa filter?

Not sure what oil you require - why not check the handbook? Failing that, try a local Alfa specialist or, in the worst case, a main dealer.

Definately do not ask Hellfrauds staff for advice

Thanks, the book will suggest the correct 15w/40 (or whatever it might be) but there are loads of brands to choose from. Just wondering if any of the Alfa enthusiasts out there know of any particular brand(s) that are known to be good for high mileage V6 engines.

For example; I remember when I had a 6.6L V8 Firebird everyone I spoke to recommended a specialist oil that was quite difficult to get (cant remember the name of it now). Same with my old V12 Jag.

Was going to say - Alfa will probably recommend Selenia (pwig works at an AR dealership); its certainly what I use in my GTV. Pricey, though.

Lots of other GTV owners swear by magnatec in the correct spec.

Bottom line is: as long as the oil's the right spec it shouldn't matter what brand you go for.

I did 80k miles in my 155 v6 on selenia racing oil, no engine probs and it didn't burn it, to any noticeable extent. I recon its good stuff.

You could use a 10W/60 such as Selenia Racing- but Castrol RS from a motor factors will work out about £1 a litre cheaper. The benefit with these oils are they are proper PAO or Ester synthetics and just work much better. That said, unless you work the engine really hard or it burns quite a bit, then a good 10W/40 or even 5W/40 will work just fine. Better to get a fully synthetic if you really want to have the best, because all non Ester synthetics and semis are just mineral oil- put through a few more processes, and then have a bit of synthetic additive thrown in.
A 0W/40 may increase real world oil consumption a bit, and hydraulic followers can be a little noisier, but best to stick to known and leading brands (Shell, Castrol, Silkolene, Motul) and avoid Halfwitts or Asda Smart Price.
