I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. My dad has the Silver AOL Package at home (i know, i told him not to get it, but he wouldn't listen) and they also have the free USB modem. With another computer in the house and both needing internet access a Belkin ADSL modem wireless router was bought and i am having a problem trying to get the router to logon to AOL. The router can see that there is an ADSL connection (even knows that the line is capable of 6mbps!) and trys to connect, but ultimatly ends up with the Disconnected - On Demand. I hae it set up with PPPoE and the screenname and password are entered into the username and password section.
I can't think of anything else so i have turned to the great knowledge of PH to help.

Many thanks

Dean

have a look on the AOL support pages - I think you have to have "screenname@aol.com" as username...also check your MTU size - drop it to 1400 on AOL otherwise you will have issuse viewing certain secure websites

i think i might know what the problem is now. I never put the @aol.com after the screen name. I will give it a go tomorrow, fingers crossed it will work.

Thanks

BTW will also remember to lower the MTU to 1400.

So i put in the screenname@aol.com and the router now connects to the internet, but now i can't get the PC to connect to the internet via that router. All firewalls are off, the DHCP is turned on (the fact that i could setup the router via a wireless connection has stumped me), if the router can be configured via a wireless connection and the router can access the net, then what is stopping the PC from accessing the net?

Any ideas?

Thanks

do you still have the AOL client installed?

you could unininstall that and check the configuration of Internet Explorer - under tools/options/connections etc...make sure its not set to dial up etc

I am trying to do the same for my parents (what is it about parents and AOL?)

Anyway, I spoke to AOL and they told me that the software that Belkin provide will not work with AOL, you have to phone up Belkin and they issue you an older version of the router software. However!, it's been impossible to get through to them so far.

That's a bugger. In that case it just might be easier to swap my netgear router with the Belkin and set that up with AOL. If you manage to get the software though, would it be possible if i too could get a copy?

Sure, if you call AOL's technical helpline they will talk you through it and check the version of the router to make sure that it is a software issue.

Netgear ADSL routers are fully supported on AOL...if you have a DG834G then AOL even supply a custom installer for it on their website - makes it real easy to install

I had to install a Netgear DG834GT on an AOL account a few months ago and I tried everything I know to get it to work but it just wouldn't so in the end I succumbed and rang the AOL support line, a very nice Indian gentlemen called Kevin said that router was not supported but he could talk me through how to get it to work which he did, I can't remember the exact steps but it did involve uninstalling the AOL client and reinstalling it, took about 45 minutes but got it working in the end

I have the original DG834G, i have managed to get this model to work with a clients AOL setup in the past so i know it works. It's just that my one has been as good as gold and i don't want to swap it over
