Evening all

Is there an easy way to tell if the gear linkages are on their way? Do they go suddenly or over time.

I got my elise back on the road after 4 months on Monday, I marvelled at how tight the gearbox was however it seemed to go a bit funny tonight so i'm not sure if its just me getting used to it again.

It seems to drive fine but feels a little lose in gear (is that normal?) and changing from 3rd to 4th the stick seems to rise slightly then dips back in as it goes into gear.

Does that sound familiar to anyone?

If it needs replacing how much is the damager and is there any uprated parts that could be used.

Get the Eliseparts gear linkage and short-shifter.

Worth every penny. Like a rifle-bolt once it's fitted

You can fit it if you're handy with a set of spanners and have patience. To get the full benefit you'll want the full kit (linkage + shortshifter).

To do the gear linkage you'll need to be able to get under the car, so ramps or axle stands are a must.

IIRC about 1.5-2hrs labour if you want to get someone else to do it.

S2 as well....had it on my car before I went Honda..much improved...most of the improvement comes from fitting a few key new parts AND paying care on installation that its all adjusted perfectly and lubed in the right places...I dont have the patience so paid someone to do it.....

I guess that was a scary moment no gear in a corner how did that go?? understeer? or sudden oversteer...depends if it happens before turning in or while in the corner...

What about the Yota powered S2s, any benefit to getting it fitted on those ?

dont think they do a kit for the Yota car and to be honest it feels a lot better than the K series affair - i think Lotus improved them as std

The BoLOC boys are fed up of hearing it but it was in StMarys, I missed the gear before entering. No power or brake input so went round ok, problems in corners are usualy too much driver input rather than too little.

cheers for the replies, I guess this is the way i'll be going then!

i've often wondered if the short shift kit is alreay fitted as the gear throw is minimal although that's comparing it to a standard car and its a long time ago since I test drove loads before I bought!

Andy,

I type with grubby fingers having just fitted both uprated linkage bushes and a quick shift.

Car was up on ramps and undertrays off as I was replacing the CAT for the MOT, the linkage bushes was a really quick job - 30 mins?? The short shift was equally quick.

I believe that you only really need to replace the linkage bushes (billy on MLOC does them for £10 I think) The linkage just needs a good clean up and the rose joints re-greased.

The bushes transform the change. Seems to "click" into each gear - very satisfying.

The short shift does what it says on the tin, but the biggest improvement came from the bushes IMHO.

Best upgrade / £££ ratio possible for the Elise. (make you wonder why they use rubber bushes in the first place??)

cheers

My MOT is dues in 8 days so as noone knows of anywhere where i can get it done without replacing the cat, i guess i can get this done at the same time.

Do Westovers do MOT? If not where do the Boloc boys get theirs done?

Had the link and short shifter done on mine, but its still not setup correct. 1st->2nd is a pain normally gets stuck in neutral.

Any suggestions, is this the left/right or up/down that needs changing and do I make it longer or shorter ?

Thanks,
Pete

According to the Eliseparts instructions, you need to shorten the linkage.

I think mine are set short already, I remember it been hard to do the lock nuts up because we could not get the spanner on one without unlocking the other. Maybe its too short now.

Its also a lot better to change from high revs from first to second than it is from low revs, and second to third is a bit poor.

This was the same with the original and I did the gearlink and shifter to try and fix this, but maybe its actually the gear box ?

I fitted mine (linkage kit and quickshifter) 2 weeks ago.

while the shift is now generally great, with a lovely snick, snick, I do have a real problem downshifting from 3rd to 2nd.

I initially had probs with 1st to 2nd, but I've shortened the linkage which has fixed that one.

I definately don't need to shorten the linkage any more (if i do then 5th doesn't work happily), so I've just got this prob with 3rd to 2nd, it just jams in neutral and won;t go straight into 2nd. it's happening on about 1/4 to 1/3 or all my 3-2 downshifts - bummer!

some folk have said that the kit settles in with time, but i must admit I'm a bit worried!

any advice???

A
