Just installed Linux, SuSe 10.0, and I've got everything working fine except the wireless... I'm using a US Robotics USB device to connect to the US robotics wireless router, but SuSe doesn't seem to find my device so I can't connect to the internet using Linux.
Can anyone help me out please?

Thanks in advance!

Is your usb working? Can you paste the contents of the command

lsmod

typed in a root terminal please? That will be a help for a start.

Also, please copy 'n paste the output of

lsusb

as above...

Thanks

Ciao

The command lsusb didn't work, but when I checked my hardware by connection, it was shown that SuSe 'saw' a 802.11 b/g wireless network adapter (or something like that)...

Hmm. I've never touched a usb network device under Linux before, but your USB stuff seems to be in order. Do you have any idea what module that usb device would be? Is it even a supported device?

Ciao

Does the device show up in Yast/network devices? Try configuring it to start up as a hotplug-device somewhere in the advanced settings.

It's a US Robotics 5416 (if I recall correctly), and it seems to show up in YaST. I'll try the hotplug thing later on.

Thanks!

Another question, if I may: how can I change the root password? I've been looking all over and can't seem to find a place to do so, I can only change passwords from users (actually, user: me ). Now, it even asks me for the password when shutting down but oddly, for each letter I type, two asterisks appear and I can't seem to get the password right...

Yes, I'm definitely a Linux newbie...

Normally it's 'passwd root' at a command prompt, of course you have have rights to do this which I'm not sure is a problem for you since you were able to lsmod earlier? If you don't have any root access the procedure is usually to access the drive from another system and edit the /etc/shadow file directly I beleive.

Sorry I cant really help with the wireless biz since I havent tried wireless on linux yet and I dont use suse but is anything listed for the wireless adapter if you do an 'ifconfig -a' ?

If you logon as another user just open shell up and type 'su' enter root password type 'passwd' and then follow the prompts.. (this is if the above 'passwd root' doesn't work
