Big Little problems

Just spent all day in the freezing garage trying to sort out all the gremlins inside but need some help on a few.

New thermostat fitted as old one was jammed open. Ive only been for a short drive but the interior heater is not chucking much heat out, it is better than before and I know they are a pain anyway. does the car need to heat up above 80 degrees first?

Does anyone no where I can get a new set of fibre optics and distruter as my centre console is very dim due to the old bulb coming loose and burning through the case.

Also where can I get some new switches for the centre console?

I have just broken a wedge and switches gone. If you had dropped me a mail last week...
I do still have the main fibre optic unit but not the fibres themselves.

I believe fibre optics were from Rover SD1, and switches were TR7.

Rimmer brothers (do google search) are great for switches and fibre optics although they can be a little expensive.

Is the engine getting up to temperature now?

Check whether the water hoses to the heater are getting hot. If not, maybe one of the hoses is blocked, or the hot/cold adjuster isn't working (is it a valve in the water pipe?), or you have an air lock in the heater.

Hot cold adjuster sounds close!!! I have fiddled with the control and seem to get warmish what ever. any ideas what to do about it. have just warmed the car right up in the garage and it did get warm air through but cooled of very quickly and had to warm it up again before getting any heat

Be very careful with the switches. The general consensus seems to be that they are TR7 or Austin Princess but on my 83 Tasmin they seem to be neither. Not sure about the later wedges.

Locate the heater hoses where they come out the back of the inlet manifold. With any luck you'll find a wire operated valve before the hoses disappear through the bulkhead.

I've seen a couple of Wedges where the cable from the dash had never been connected to the hot water valve! IIRC on the red 390SE that Grahamw48 just sold, the valve had red and blue labels on it to indicate whether the valve was open or not

But yes, the heaters are notoriously crap, my car heats up quicker from the exhaust warmth coming through the tunnel

350? Not sure if the heater pipes are the same arrangement through the bulkhead as the 400 but I fitted a bleed valve to help get rid of heater matrix air locks. Seems to work for £2 of plumbing.

Early Range Rovers for the fibre optics? - or you could try getting hold of a cluster of super bright white LEDs and glue them into the fibre optic Lucas jobbie. Should run cooler and throw out more light into the fibres than the 12v dim burn your car out bulb option.
