Following lots of good reviews on Pagid RS42 I have just fitted a set to my car only for them to squeal from the front to a point where it is undriveable!

My car is an S2 with 23K on the clock. The discs are the original cross drilled items and are still within Lotus recommended tolerance (25mm). The self adhesive anti-squeal shims have been fitted, but have not improved the issue.

Does anyone have any ideas how to stop this squealing?

yep - bed the pads in properly - you need to get some heat into them

find a quiet road and do a few runs to 30mph then brake down to 10mph

then do the same to 50mph
then the same to 70mph
then a few emergency stops from 50ish braking as hard as you can and when you stop keep your foot on the pedal real hard for 10 secs or so

that should sort it out.

or alternatively........ Just get used to it. I`ve had to! It comes and goes, but always comes back. It was positively embarassing when there where new. Pulling up at traffic lights and everyone turns round and stares at you. Dogs from miles around come running. A few airfield/track days later its better than it was. You just learn to live with it, turn your music up and/or get a loud exhaust etc!

it can be worse with different types of disc - mine dont squeal at all, but I have AP5000 discs......whereas when I had EBCs it seemed worse.

I did this when my rs42's with ebc discs were fitted after reading a previous post of yours & the brakes are really good now. They make a bit of noise round town but not much & when they are warmed up it goes completely

cool - I find that if I dont drive the car for a few days and crap builds up on the discs I have to just do a few stops to clean them off again...also if you do a lot of motorway miles and dont use them very hard it helps to give them a good hammering at the weekend

I have RS14 which can do the same thing. They were fitted by Plans and were run in by doing 3 100+ stops this apparently puts a certain amount of the pad material on the disc. All I can say is it works! After a while they squeak so I have to do a few more high speed stops and that seems to cure it.
