My laptop has the following DVD writer:

MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E:

CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW

I want to transfer some video to DVD and save some photos.

Which blank DVDs are best for the job and can I use them for photos aswell?

1) Which OS?
2) Do you have a DVD writing application? A DVD authoring application? You will need a DVD burning solution to save data and an authoring solution to save videos for viewing on a set top box.
3) Win XP does not support data write to DVD out of the box. You need an application like Sonic's RecordNow!

---

...and then, you enter discussion into which DVD format is the best. Current thinking is -R / -RW gives you less errors because of the way that it stores information. The jury is still out one that.

---

...and then, you enter into the discussion of what BRAND of media to use. For highly important data, you can always use medical grade optical media but it gets expensive. Possibly certain runs of Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden media are "the best" at the moment.

I'm on an Apple iBookG4 with Mac OSx I have all the software just wanted to know about the difference between -/+ R, RW and which is best for saving video and photos.

I understand that not all DVD players support +R ,RW

Also RW means that you can re-record on them is this the case?

Yes, you can re-record. Works similar to CD-RW

Ahas been said RW's are re-writable, the difference between + and - is the file system used,

- discs are batch write, basically you can only write to them once. With RW if you want to write to them again you have to format the disk.

+ discs aren't, so you can write some stuff once, then later if you want to add more you just add it to the disk.

I have heard that +'s are better discs, they do cost more, I've used both and not had any significant problems, the odd failed disc, but thats to be expected.

I believe that -R discs are generally more compatable in domestic DVD players. I always burn my films onto -Rs and haven't had any problems as yet.
