Once upon a time I used to own an MGB GT which had "overdrive" which at the time was the dog's proverbials. I've just recently bought a 996 C4 with tiptronic and to be truthful the speed (or lack of it) that the thing kicks in reminds me of my old (and I mean old) MGB overdrive cutting in! Cutting edge stuff!

How many gears has the tip got? Are you sure they don't get away with 1 less shift in the sprint to 60/100?

I spoke to AFN Chiswick about the Tiptronic being reported as faster than the manual.

He said early cars are just the standard Tiptronic (as in Merc AMG auto box found in the current 996TT with 5 speeds) and it is faster than a manual ??!?!?.

The "Double Clutch" (a la Audi DSG) will be introduced about a year after initial launch, and will be quicker still.

I asked him to confirm and he toddled off and got a 2nd opinion and they said the same. Still find it hard to believe and I am 996TT Tip fan.
