Hi

If you want to import an electrical product from a non-EC state how do I get CE approval for the product?

Thank you
Simon

Sorry if this is very vague, but if it is a sub-assembly component, i'm not entirely sure it is required. The final product has to be CE marked but this can be done through a form of self certification IIRC.

Be very cautious when sourcing in the far-east. I once knew a company that had a component made for them from a copy of an existing British product, with a few minor changes to avoid patent infractions. The Chinese were obliging enough to copy the product down to and including the BS1361 standard number on the back. When I finally got the production director to submit the product to BSI for testing about six months after we put it on the market, we found it failed to meet these standards on at least 5 counts.

If you source abroad, you MUST be completely specific about all you require.

Good Luck.

Thanks. It's a incubator made by an american firm just they have not got it CE marked.
Will I have any problems importing a single unit into the UK without a CE mark? They are worried it may be taken by customs.
Just briefly thought about the possibilty of importing them on a small scale and what would be involved.
Thanks
Si

I'm about 15 miles down the road from the UK office of Chickmaster (Buckeye), and have done a lot of business with them in the past. Not that it helps much, but hey, strange old world isn't it?. Have you had a look at their products?, they seem to be one of THE names in the industry.

Thanks for your help but I'm only doing it for a hobby not on that scale. Cool to see it thought, thanks.

Should not have a problem. I regularly receive electrical goods from the US that don't have CE marking but customs exclusions exist for stuff like samples, trade shows, prototypes etc. Stuff going to the US has similar rules, but more strictly enforced has caused some delays but never resulted in not getting the goods.

If you plan to sell it then CE marking is an issue and in the past trying to educate our US friends was a real up hill battle over the differences between FCC approval and CE approval.

IIRC - Legally if the product is made outside of the EU then it is the importers responcibility to ensure approval. Large fine and Prison if you are caught, however from memory very few companies/people has ever been charged and action taken.

However you might be able to get away with it if you are buying for your own use.
