I've been looking at Chims for a bit (and lurking here), and found a nice 500. Put an offer in, vendor accepted it, and all is going ahead for the end of this week.

Trouble is, it seems there are two VIN numbers entered in the manual.

They're only different on two digits, and the vendor claims they're in the same handwriting. I suspect that this might be a "they're all like that, sir" moment, but I just wondered if anyone had any idea how likely this situation really was.

PS: One of the VIN numbers runs through HPI with the correct reg no, etc.,or I wouldn't even bother asking.

What VIN is shown on the chassis plate on the inner wing? - that's the proper one. If this checks out OK with HPI you're safe. Just modify the handbook, it's all handwritten and can be wrong.

I would check the Vin number under the bonnet against the one on the V5 and if they are both the same HPI that number. The service book should also show the same Vin number and it should also be written on the sheet for each service.
Remember that the value of the car when you come to sell it will be affected directly by "proper history". Like any other car usual caution applies, buy in the trade or only privately from someone living at the V5 address. Walk away if you are not sure, plenty out there, especially this time of year.

Be careful out there and good luck!!!!

I have one of the last 100 Griffiths and the plate in the glovebox reads 5/100. The handbook reads 4/100 !

But with a VIN I would have both checked by HPI and see what the other one comes up with. It is an expense but nothing compared to buying a 'cut and shut' ! I doubt it is but I would want the piece of mind.

Do you not know any of the previous history of th car at all ?
