S3 part exchange.....

Hello Chaps....

I like the look of the V8S on David Geralds website...24k miles...BRG...a real beauty....£10995.
So i popped along to get a better look...yup a real beauty....but alas! he would only give me £3500 for my S3. He said that the 87k mileage reflected the trade in price. Needless to say I wuz disappointed...hoping for around £4000 to £4500.
My speedo packed up awhile ago and he said unless that was fixed he didn't really want it. I paid a tad over the odds for it last April at £6600 and have subsequently spent about £2000 since then....deep joy! I came away a bit glum...Methinks I'll be keeping the old girl forever...I might even consider being buried in it when I die...

Any thoughts Chaps....Paul.

Get it up for sale for 5k straight away and you should get it very quickly if the car is as good as it looks.

I wouldn't be glum - yours looks a nice car from your profile pic.

Plus if you've spent money on it then it sounds like it should be in reasonable condition. Check out the classified and as Derek says, you'll get more from a private sale and with Spring coming, it shouldn't take too long.

There's also another (cheaper) V8 in the classifieds at Henley Heritage but don't know how it compares with the one you've seen at David Geralds.

There yer go - more dosh for yours and a lower purchase price on the next one. Just buy me a sometime with what I've saved you!

ah the joys of pouring cash and effort into old sports cars only to find they have little value at the end
if it makes you fell any less glum i've put 5 grands worth of new bits on my v8 over the winter and 400hrs of labour and it probably hasn't changed the value by more than a grand or so - drives better though !

i have pumped in excess of 9k into my s1 with the £3300 i paid for it, you think i'm crazy and I am, But at least its getting what I want.
I think its better value than a new ford focus for the same money, sounds better too.
I'd love a V8S but i'd only crash it, hurt myself and have nothing to show for it lol.

Keep the S3, it looks good and its still immense fun

Keep the V6 (better the devil)

Spend some cash on driver training. Find the limits of the car on a track and you will get from A>B as quick as the V8S. The only thing missing is the V8 rumble, but I am the TVR minority in suggesting my V6S sounded as good as my debaffled V8, albeit totally different.

Thanks Roger but I'm gonna' hang on for the fairweather surge in sportscar interest to get a better price. TBH it would grieve me to sell at £4500 because of all the money spent so far...Selling it privately in springtime, I would hope to get around the 6k mark...it needs an MOT pretty soon anyway...another nettle I will need to grasp.

The lower trade in price was anticipated but not quite that low...had the chap at David Geralds been a bit more flexible on the price of the V8s I would have been swayed to do the deal. Even though my circumstances this summer are tricky for keeping a TVR around the place due to building work...so maybe it's just as well.

more to the point, considering the speedo packed up a while ago I'm surprised he gave you the trade in price to reflect a mileage of only 87k

To be honest 87k / 97k makes no difference on an 'H' reg car. Condititon is the only factor.

I second all the above, the dealer will probably stick the '£3.5K' car on his forecourt for around £6.5K be rest assured of that? like you say i would think a decent S3 should fetch between £5-£6.5K and I have seen some go for more. Personally I would sell privately and buy privately after having it inspected correctly, that will save about £2-3K

The other way of looking at it, is that TVR dealers so rarely do deals that each one has to be top profit.

Good point.. You know the car and its personality, (was going to say weaknesses, but thats not quite right..)

If you miss the V8 noise then, trust me, you can get a V6 to sound very impressive.. Decat it, 3 inch stainless straight through system with no silencers and a pair of cherry bombs just behind the drivers seat. I've had plenty of far faster cars get out of the way when I approached because it sounded like thunder and they wondered what the hell I was driving..

Driver training, better suspension and brakes and maybe a few engine tweaks. It may not beat the V8s, but it will be a fun, sorted car that you already know well..
