Not running on all 8,and strong smell of petrol?

During the middle of last year my car developed a problem,where there was a drop of power as though it werent running on all cylinders,after an inspection it was found that the main battery lead was in dire need of replacing,i thought that this maybe the problem as there could have been a drop in power and this would cause the problem.So with the lead replaced my problem seemed to have dissappeared,until yesterday.On my way home whilst travelling along i noticed that the car felt as though it dropped a couple of cylinders,which was followed by a strong smell of petrol within the car.I dropped the car in to second and floored it,thinking that it could have over fuelled and by me flooring it would clear the problem.No such luck.I pull over switch the engine off ,restart,problem still there,i pull away open the throttle and the problem clears itself,until this morning when i leave to go to work,the car is ok for the first mile then the problem appears again,this goes on for about 5 miles then it clears itself again for about a mile,then it comes back again to which its still there now having covered another 12 miles.Ive checked the obvious,plug leads,battery connections and disconnected the E.C.U to clear any probs there,but no luck.So its still running rough with a definate change of pitch in the exhaust,and stinking of petrol inside the car.Sorry if this is long winded and some of you may have fell to sleep half way through this post,but i wanted to give a positive description in the hope some one else has suffered this problem and can put a positive finger on the problem.

You could find out which cylinder you think it may be. ( check exhaust see which pipe is cooler than the others) Then check the plug in that cylinder if not the plug swap the injector from another cylinder and see if it moves the problem.

Mine has just started ticking over at 400RPM, but i ok when driving normally. I've just ordered two new coil packs to see if that helps. Will keep you posted.

Misfire could be caused by an ignition fault, which could be an intermittant HT leak that you can't see or simply a failing coil etc

Be careful if you're pumping unburnt fuel down the exhaust, if you've still got cats it could damage them.

Plug it in to a laptop. That should throw up any faults.

Agreed, this sort of problem should be narrowed down while looking at the diagnostics page with a laptop. You will see straight away which bank is causing the problem, and if it is overfuelling, the adaptives will be way out.

Sounds very similar to problem I had, which didn’t show up on ECU diagnostics but turned out to be faulty fuel regulator valve, on 4.2 its at back of engine under cowling, has a brass saucer shaped drum attached to it like an old fashioned vacuum advance. This was failing when engine was hot and flooding some of the cylinders.

You going to touch a hot exhaust to see which is cooler then?

Ouch, Ahh, , ahh this one is cooler it didn't completely remove the skin from my hand.

The car has been de-catted and got an e-prom upgrade chip fitted,was wondering if the carbon filter was to get blocked and saturated with fuel would it cause these problems?

This sounds the same as mine two years ago as I was coming back from the V Waters meeting.
Was ok for a mile then bad for 5. Got me home though.
Turned out to be the coil packs!
