I am looking for a DNS lookup program. I have a text file with 50000 domains and I want to make sure that they all exist and have valid MX records. Now I could write this myself but I am hopeing there is something out there to save me some time.

If you've got a linux box you could use 'dig'. You'd just need to append the text ' mx' to each line in the file, assuming each line is just a domain name and a carridge return. You just get 'ANSWER: 0' on a line 3 after the name of the query that fails, so for a list of the fails it would be

dig -f filename.txt | grep -B 3 'ANSWER: 0' > results.txt

And come back in a few hours

I prefer to call it email marketing. And what I am doing does not breach the EU spamming laws. Its only being sent to business email addresses on an opted in list.

Opt in lists are total fraud. Half the spam that I receive promises to have been sent to 'opt in' addresses only. I guard my email addresses carefully and I haven't opted in to anything. Doesn't stop the spam. Email list sellers have found that they can sell their list to fools more easily if they say it is an 'opt-in' list and that's all there is to that claim; you have been taken, and now will go on to perpetrate the problem for tens of thousands of others. Spammers are the scum of the Internet and you will now joining them. I dare you to contact a small sample of the addresses that you have and ask them if they were aware that they are on an opt-in list and if they wish to received 'email marketing'. I bet not 1% will agree. But you already know that don't you? And you don't care. Becuase you are a spammer.

Surely you are not trying to defend this guy?

If someone had started a thread asking how to use a tool that’s commonly used to steal cars, and people were telling him how to do it, would you ask that question of the guy who pointed out the problem? Spammers steal from people by using the consumers own resources to advertise to that consumer. But wait you say, 'you can't equate stealing cars to a little thing like send out spam!' No, spam is far worse. The 2004 estimated cost to the world's economy ranges around Fifty Billion Dollars. And this is something perpetrated by a tiny minority of people.

The only thing useful in this thread is the fact that we now know that plasticpig is a spammer. Sorry, 'email marketer', by his own admission. He has evidently recently gotten his hands on a list of Fifty Thousand businesses and is planning to mass email them ads time and again and claims that they all want this service. Personally I would ban the guy. But its not my website so I can only let people know what’s going on. I would say that's more useful than inadvertently helping him spam.

So you'd consider Ted's weekly PH classified ads roundup as spam then? They're mass mailed to an opt in list. What if he's got 50000 of his own customer email addresses and he's emailing them with a change of business address? Or to tell them of a cut in prices?

Maybe i'm alone in recieving useful mass mailed stuff from opt in lists.

I don't see the paralel with theft. Hacking is a good comparison, but spam is the equivalent of sticking a note under the wiper.

Damn. I wish I'd known. There's no way I'd have helped you, in that case. Hopefully an asteroid will fall on you.

Wrong. Deeply, profoundly and fundamentally wrong. Spam is the equivalent of receiving 200 items of snail mail a day with postage owing on them. The costs of delivering and dealing with spam fall on the recipients, which makes spam theft. Spammers are thieves. And never forget the first rule of spammers; Spammers lie. It's what they do. They lie about opting in (I've never opted in to a spammers list in my life, and yet still receive emails claiming that I have), they lie about their products, they lie about unsubscribing you from their lists. Why on Earth does anyone do business with these people? I most certainly don't. And if I said what I really think about spammers, I imagine Ted would sin-bin me for language.

So many assumptions there:

I didnt buy the list (Its not for sale).
The list dosent belong to me or my comapny.
The list does not originate from email marketers.
I am not emailing anyone. I leave that to the professionals.
I know the list is opt in because I know exactly how the list was built up.
Only business to business products are being marketed.
All emails contain an opt out option that is honored in compliance with EU directives.
Since you are in the US you will never see on of the emails because they are UK only.

A lot of people don’t share your point of view. If they did we wouldn’t have got loads of leads from email marketing.

If you want to stop email marketing then campaign to make it illegal. It is refreshing however to come across someone who lives in the US and doesn’t believe that the first amendment is the be all and end all of free speech.

Oh and by the way I am quite capable of developing my own tools. I was just trying to save some time.
