Guys, whats the next progressive step, i want a bit more grunt?
I already have a SS exhaust fitted..with a sports centre silencer. I was thinking MA chip, and new cam.
Would sort of difference would this make?
Just MA chip..?
MA chip plus cam..?
Where does this take the power figures for a 400?

The chip done before I bought it so I can't really say how much of a difference it made to the car. But it's stronger that the 350 up to 4k rpm and then it revs like a b****rd up to 6k rpm. Maaaaarrrrvelous

Breathing seems to be the primary restriction on these engines. I can't tell if you've got hotwire or flapper. If the former, I believe that MA can burn a new program into the ECU to suit the fuelling requirements, however, you've still got that phsical restriction to the airflow, although you can partly overcome that with a larger AFM. If hotwire, things are better - very little restriction, more sophisticated metering and chips available. However, neither of these address the control of the ignition timing and advance. I believe real gains can be made by having mapable ignition. Assuming you've got hotwire and dont want to junk it, I'd say go for mapable ignition, 72mm throttle disc, 45mm shortened trumpets on a modified base and inlet manifold, followed by a BV conversion. If you've got a flapper, do what I did and junk the whole lot and go programable.
Not sure what cam was standard in the 400, but I'm running what was standard in the 4.3 which is a 214. Perfectly driveable. My revised set up (before remapping for the big trumpets/injectors/manifold is giving 300 bhp and 325 ft lbs. so you can get good gains over standard, just depends how much you want to spend. But, if you dont want to do it all at once, going fully mapable is the best option IMHO.

Only 6000? My limiter doesn't come in till 6500...

The injectors were always Bosch, as far as I'm aware.... some just had Lucas part numbers. I have some with both. Incidentally I'm working on a new throttle body mod: if I could only crack this alloy welding lark

Do you know which cam you have already? A change could be worthwhile, especially if its worn, but IMHO you don't want to be taking a standard 400 engine over 6000 rpm on a regular basis, even if you get hi-rev tappets.

What's that lot likely to cost?
Well assuming you do the removal and installation yourself, you should be able to do the big throttle, trumpets/base/manifold for c. £300-£400. Cant tell you about the ignition, but from what I've read on other fora, there are a few choices out there now, maybe low hundreds in cost. I had my BV conversion done with a lot of other stuff, rather than do it myself, but potentially this only involves relatively small parts cost, but much more in machining and labour/set-up. Should be fairly easy for someone to give you a quote for the work.

I don't. I've checked through the (extensive) service history i have, but can't see anything relating to cam replacement. Assume it's still the original?
My car has done 67,000 miles, and i genuinely don't feel much difference in performance from the 350i I had before..?? Certainly not how I would describe as "wow..way faster"
As i understand it the Rover V8 doesn't really like to rev..as opposed to the AJPV8 flat plane crank engines in Cerbs etc..
60-70,000 seems to be the mileage most peeps change their cams??

My car does have a rev limiter fitted, I normally have it set at about 6000 or so mostly because although it will rev past 6000 (past 6500 in fact) there doesn't seem to be any point in doing so. Most of the 'pull' has gone by 6000 anyway, and my mechanical sympathy gland starts throbbing (along with my bleeding eardrums) if I use those sort of revs for more than a few seconds. So I don't
Incidentally my car runs standard valvegear (apart from shortened guides), hydraulic tappets and an RPI cam. How long it could maintain 6500 before the lifters pumped up I wouldn't like to guess.
My main problem last year was that the ignition trigger pickup in the dizzy was breaking down and acting as a rev limiter anyway, but at around 5300 rpm. So the car was topping out at only about 120 mph (on that private test track, obviously). I'm looking forward to seeing what it will do with the replacement pickup and my fatter injectors...

Waynester, if that's the original cam, then it's likely to be well past it's prime. You may well find that just replacing with new will be a revelation. It should certainly be significantly quicker than a std. 350 - you're talking about an extra 40-50 bhp after all.
