Old Porky paint code

Hi,

My 1982 924 is in the paint shop for a nose job and the guys there are struggling to match the colour. The paint tag is missing from the boot and all the VW/Audi/Porsche colours that they have don't match.

It is a gold/bronze colour which I suspect might be called Sahara (code LA1Z) although I could be wrong.

How do I find out what the paint code is and can anyone help?

Can you really paint match a 24 year old finish?

I mean - I know these older porsches had about 6 inches of paint on them underneath 42 layers of laquer, but surely the sun is going to affect anything more than a few years old?

it's a metallic which generally don't fade over time.

Jimmy is right, at that sort of age you`re more working to the car. Never mind fading, what colour did the last chap decide to use when he painted it, (and probably which part of the car do you want it to match with ?)

Your painter should have a set of colour chips to go with his paint mixing scheme arranged in manufacturer order. He can use that to identify the colour then tint as appropriate. Failing that a call to Porsche HQ in Reading with the chassis number should flag up the original colour.

They want the code as a starting point as none of the chips match any of the panels on the car. Also after a few years of obsolescence the paint manufacturers stop releasing chips for the old colours so chances are they don't have it.

I'll give Porsche a call, thanks for the help chaps anyway!

Not sure if this will apply to you, but. My 964 was in for some paint. I discovered then that Guards Red was made by Glasurit, ICI & DuPont and they had over the years about a dozen differing shades, ranging from an orange red to a blueish red.

In the end the paint shop measure the colour and blended the paint. Sometimes its all you can do.
