It works out expensive, and I had to leave some clothes in the UK to get it all in the suitcase!

Manfrotto 055 CLB & 410 geared head...

...plus a sucker (or was that me?)

Mate, if you can knock over an 055 you can knock over anything (except possibly Bacardi's 'Robbie the Robot' stand )

Got out and used them today. How on earth did I ever take pictures without a geared head? It's bleedin' great!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a geared head?

Tripod heads usually work by undoing a beg "wingnut" type clamp, you tilt the camera then tighten it back up. Usually, once you've tightened the clamp then let go the camera it sags, and is therefor not where you wanted it. With a geared head you adjust the tilt directions by turning the knobs. It goes straigh to where you want it and no sagging. A finicky little thing but it takes away a lot of the faffing around.

I see. I take it you can still lock it off to stop it moving around?
