Hi Guys

Just purchased a 3200gt, yeehaa! Is there any oil/particular grade you recommend, such as Selenia fully synthetic? I'll be using it as a daily driver so expect some healthy fuel consumption.
I was a week too late for the Virginia Water meet and I only live down the road - have you got any other meets lined up?

Thanks,
Doug

Maserati recommend Selenia Racing (fully synthetic) 10w/60, which you can pick up from any Fiat or Alfa dealer, or order from www.shop4parts.com or www.alfashop.co.uk (IIRC).

Congrats Doug, glad to hear there is another 3200 owner down the road. I am in Camberley, very close to VW. Great day it was, some pictures of that day here www.maserati3200.com/Feb2006/February_05_2006.htm

Stick with Selina and nothing else otherwise you may regret it. 3200s are very fussy, don't use cheap fuel e.g. Tescos either.

Daily runs home to work you can look at 15 to 20 mpg.

Remember the 3200 does not like the wet and the cold! So let her warm up a little in the morning and keep the sports option off, after she is a GT!

You will have lots of fun, everytime you drive a 3200 you will always smile. Take it easy and enjoy knowing what you have is a thorougbred, let the slow ants who try to challange you go, it's not worth it. (Only have a blast with the real cars, e.g. other Maseratis and of-course Ferraris, Lambos, etc etc)!!!!

Forgot to add, no meets up really planned but this can be arranged, check out Piston Heads for this, also the Maserati Club UK.

Gavin

Thanks Gavin & Scooterman for your help. I've only had the car for 10 days but I'm having a blast already. I seem to be taking a longer route to work than usual

What I do like about them is that they seem to attract the right kind of attention. I've had nothing but praise and admiring glances since I've had it which makes a nice change.

I'm waiting in trepidation for the dreaded engine light to come on though - I've heard so many stories and read lots of threads on this site about it. Am I getting paranoid??

Three things I have learned about the 3200GT
Never turn the traction control off ever
Never put it in sport in the wet
Bank on about £1 per mile in maintenance costs
Brilliant car and worth the bills

Hi Doug,

Congratulations on the 3200 - great to have you join the group - and glad you are having a great time already....

Just had my alloys all re-furbed (foc) - they look simply stunning - and five months into ownership the car still takes my breath away....

Pity you missed VW - was a great day (btw Gavin - nice pics... who's the handsome guy with his hood up!!)

There should be lots of opportunitiy for Maserati meets, for example....

Me and Mazzer3.2 are meeting in Colchester on Sunday morning for a bit of a spin - you are of course welcome to join us - let me know if you want details......

Don't be paranoid - enjoy your car

Cheers
John

I brought a couple of two litre cans of the Selenia from the local Maserati dealer at £19.88 a can, so not too scary. Although my car seems to be of the moderately thirsty variety, but still love it to bits. On a long run you will just want to keep on driving past your destination

J'Boy, am still on for Sunday, fingers crossed the weather is better than last Sunday!

try an Alfa dealership next time for Selenia 10/60 synthetic, you should be able to get it a fair bit cheaper than that!

2 litres of Selenia Racing 10/60 is £12.47 from shop4parts.co.uk (thanks for the earlier link)and postage is about £7.50 so I got stocked up with a few bottles to save on the postage. All in all that's a pretty good price and at least I can order it while sitting on my ample backside reading these posts

Then I suggest you change it fast. The only oil recommended by Maserati is Selenia Racing 10/60. Although another fully synth could be used used in an emergency provided it is 10/60 (eg Castrol RS), anything else is courting disaster.

Hope this helps

im sure my 3200 ran on either shell helix ultra or mobil 1. def not selenia. it was always serviced by main dealers including maranello. cant see why it should run on selenia only. has to be fully synthetic tho due to turbo heat and right viscosity and dont mix different oils. Saying it should run on selenia is a bit like ferrari saying to use helix (shell) and shell petrol, hmm who is one of their biggest f1 sponsors? Oh and back to Selinia, they are a very small company comparing to oil company standards and they used to be owned by surprise surprise, Fiat.

i would ask a main dealer or Karl at verdi

The factory workshop manuals themselves state Selenia Racing only and that is good enough for me. Mobil 1 Autosport is IIRC a 15/50 whilst Shell Helix Ultra is a 5/40. If a main dealer or an Independent state that you can run on these grades they are wrong.

At the end of the day, the factory knows best, not the dealers.

Hope this helps

it's all about the oil quality not who preffers which... selenia racing is NOT the best syntetic oil you can use for your car. and if maserati official service in milano (italy) puts agip in my motor then i really don't care...

If you don't want to run Selenia, then you must still use a 10W/60 fully synthetic alternative. Other options are Agip 10W/60 and Castrol RS 10W/60.

I believe there is also a good Motul alternative, but I have not seen it.

Racing 10w/40? Not heard of that before; the only "Racing" one I know of is 10w/60 FS, and the only Selenia 10w/40 is the semi-synthetic 20K as used in older Alfas and Fiats.
