Hello!

You'll have to excuse any ignorance on this one...I'm pretty clueless mechanically. Anyway, I have a 1996 993 and when I bought it (privately) it had had a lightweight RS clutch and flywheel fitted. Took it to a garage to have something else looked at this week and they commented on the rattling at tickover. This disappears when you push the clutch in. There is also a kinda scrapy noise on low revs when you put your foot down. Again, this goes away when the revs move higher.

Is this normal for this kind of setup? Should I be worried? Is there anything I should get looked at?

Thanks in advance!!!

Matt

Hi Matt,

You have given a perfect description of how a lightweight flywheel behaves! Seriously, everything you have said is normal, the rattle at tick over, the way it disappears if you depress the clutch or move up the rev range. It sounds like nuts and bolts in a tumble dryer, does it not?

Why on earth your garage didn't know this is a little strange. Mate, are they qualified to be looking after a 993?

I love the lightweight flywheel. It is much better for blipping the throttle when heel and toeing. It allows my car to rev like a chainsaw!

you wanna hear a rattling clutch?

go to your local Ducati dealer and ask them to start up a bike with a open clutch housing.

mine sounds very agricultural, just how its meant to sound.

(im actually wanting to hear your car now, and wondering weather to put the RS Clutch on my 996)

Spot on Doc....

Matt, never go near that garage again unless they sell milk, fags or naughty mags....

As has been said, never go to that garage again!!

Also you mention a scrapey noise at low revs - did this happen as you are turning on throttle at low speed (e.g. accelerating out of a parking space)? More a sort of grumbling sound than a scraping, but if so, the car may have had an LSD fitted as well. Would make sense given the previously mentioned mods.

I think the "scraping" noise he is refering to at low revs is the classic "Coffee Grinder" noise of the transmission being laboured. This is due to the single mass fly wheel, but disappears as the car picks up pace.

Is this also the symptoms of a (dual mass) flywheel on its way out?

Hi guys

Thanks a lot for your help on this one - a bit of a weight off. When I bought the car I got it checked by Neinmeister and I commented on the rattling as I wasn't familiar with the characteristics you've now all described. They didn't comment but picked up a couple of other things so I didn't worry.

To be fair to the other garage I went to last week, I'd gone there to get an electrical problem checked out and they had commented on the setup saying that a C4 should hava double mass flywheel and they suspected an aftermarket setup (although also commented that the fhywheel would have to be genuine). I checked my paperwork from previous to buying the car when I got home, phoned the garage and told them it had a lightweight setup and they then said not to worry about it then.

I am a bit of a worrier though...hence my posting!!!

Thanks for all your comments on this one - bit of a releif!
:-)
