just had the 6k service done by Offords and they did a first class service and changed some bushes on the front wishbones as well so it handles better now ,it was mentioned that the clutch was worn but cant say that i have noticed it ,but has anyone done this themselves and is it a bugger of a job due to access on the chim ,i have done clutch changes on rover sd1's before so i know that the box is heavy ,so has anyone experience of this ..
It is just a pain because of the weight and access. the exhausts and a lot of other bits have to come off and manipulating the gear lever can be a pain as well.
Also don't get any clutch parts until you see what they have fitted... there is a lot of variation. Don't use SD1 clutches... they last about 2 minutes. Change the release bearing and check the release arm. Probably worth changing anyway. They can wear and bend or brake!
There is a new section on this in the 2nd edition.

What type of garage would tell you oh the clutch is worn, common sense tells you wait until it starts to play up or starts to slip that could be another 5000 or 20000 miles how would they know, same thing oh the shocks are worn or oh the wiper motor is worn or oh the camshaft is worn when is it ever going to end, these people are just waiting to rip you off !.
Tell me about it!

Woaah! Hold on a minute, not everyone is trying to rip you off! When your clutch does give way and you are stuck without the car for weeks you'll be blaming them for not spotting it at the last service! Some mechanics are honest ... yes it's true! So please don't tar us all with the same brush ... If I thought your clutch was worn I would tell you ... whether you change it or not is up to you! If you think someone is trying to pull a fast one .. ask them to show you how they decided it was worn ... if they can't .. then they are having your pants down ... if they can then they are trying to be helpful!
All steamed out now!

If you have the car with the inspection hatch it is possible to have a look or you can sometimes tell by the clutch pedal position.
A clutch job is expensive and yes you usually do get some warning so it is either warn the customer (to give time to start saving - it is not cheap compared to other cars) or go ahead and do it.
I think Offord have been reasonable in this case.

sorry for ranting on a bit, one of those days , i know that not all the people out there are waiting to rip us off and i don't want to tar anyone with the same brush , if the evidence is made clear that repairs are going to be required then yes i agree ,but after reading so many posts about different repairs and whatever, it sometimes makes me wander what others are like.
