Last night, I was travelling into town on the motor way. I was car number 4 of 4 cars trundling along behind an escort estate police car. We were doing the 50mph limit. Now, the police car takes his exit and from the offramp, which rises, he has a perfect view of all the cars that were behind him. Car number 2 then boots it past car number one. I was just about to pull out to overtake when I see the blues and twos from the cop who just pulled off. And you guessed it, he comes right back on the onramp at the other side (after a bridge which obscured him from car 2) and goes after him. Now I thought that was a little harsh myself but funny as I had a perfect view of it all.

I dont think he could have done him for speeding though. Car 2 just has to say he was overtaking car 1 doing 50?

Potted many myself like that. The old Eddie Waring (rugby commentator for those that don't remember) 'Up and over' trick he used to say that when there was a successful conversion kick

the oldest trick in the book by the police......

now if you really want to impress them stop before the next off ramp on the hard shoulder

if they can play stupid games so can we.

nope, best option, ALWAYS look up the on ramp as you go past.

Don't give them the satisfaction of a chase, they love it.

Unless of course you have an R1 or Thunderace, as I discovered these can out run a helicopter... Hayabusa better, just don't run out of petrol before you've found a good place to hide.

Not that I condone running from Plod, of course - just letting you know some more options.

I hope they don't or I'm twice as likely to get pulled by a bored/tetchey copper than most....

Is is true that coppers play NIP Snooker. If so I'm in sh*t as I have a RED car! Ooops.

This trick works for civilians too....unsure if the following car with the roof rack and dazzling white headlights is plod? - a quick loop over the next junction lets you make sure.

Alternatively if you have figured that they are plod and you suspect that they are pulling an up and over trick for you then slip tight in front of a heavy vehicle whilst you are out of sight, then chuckle as they come past at warp 9 trying to work out where you went...

Sound's good for obvious plodmobiles, but it's unmarked ones that are tricky.

I always feel there's a game of poker to be played here. Is he, isn't he?

A subtley coloured repmobile/exec.

Are there any personalising details, tow bar, GB sticker, dealer sticker?

Is it the a V6 or a cooking four pot?

Does it roll on Alloys or steels.

I won't say which way each of these factors make my opinion swing as to an appoaching cars true ID, but it's not hard to guess.

Thing is, looking out for these things makes you paranoid and you end up slowing down anyway. So in a way Unmarked cars work as a deterrent even when they're not there.
