Ok can anyone help I am looking to buy a chimaera and have come across a real nice 98 4.0 HC, but i have heard a few nightmare stories with them in regards to problems with the engine and that they are in and out of the garage all the time. is there any truth to this and can anyone help out with the pro's and con's of haveing a HC rather than a normal
cheers

So much bul
t surrounds the different variants it's unreal.A well looked after one in any form is the one you want.None are more or less reliable that another is the only way to look at it imho. All this usually stems from one-upmanship and sour grapes etc.Just buy the one you like and enjoy

[quote=GreenV8S]The HC variant is just the same (in terms of reliability) as the non-HC. There are far more HC badges than there are HC engines by the way so don't pay over the odds just because it claims to be an HC.
I have an HC but no exterior badges ? should it have if so where ?

Hi i have an Hc and not had it long but i an pleased so far, as said it is all to do with how it is treated good history e.t.c you can see from the bills what kind of owners it has had those who throw money at the slightest problem are great, some of these cars especially slightly cheaper s and wedge have been owned by people who do not have the cash and are run on a shoestring and because of the prices can be used and abused by people who now very little about cars , but not all.
I don't have pots of cash but I have done cars for a living , when i sell the car it won't have a dealer history since i have owned it but it has at kind of portfolio with pictures e.t.c.
One thing that has come light is the HC cars tend not to like constant throttle at about 1500-1800rpm , just a little shunty, i believe it is probably the high lift cam.
I to had the same concerns and had been told the scary stories,by non HC owner,if i look at the history and bills for the car since new all that has been replaced on tha car is standard throughout the chim , i.e shocks , brakes , radiator, ball joint.
Note not lots of engine tune ups as i was told.
good luck

Is that the one at District garage ,it does look nice.
I have only seen the 4.0hc upto 97', not sen one with the later lights.
In the front of the owners hand book it should list the chassis and model e.t.c.
This may not be the same for all , but my handbook only lists the preformance /power figures for the Hc variants 4.0/5.0.Does not included other models.
Maybe worth a check, as i also thought the 4.5 had replaced it by then , though i am no guru.

I had a 96 4.0 HC, and I too heard all the scare stories before during and after about the HC losing compression and everything apart from being hit by asteroids.
I had mine for ages and drove it all over the place, up to Scotland and everywhere, and had NO problems with the engine at all. It was regularly serviced and I kept it tuned, but nothing went with it at all.
In total of 20,000 miles approx of driving I had a Diff oil seal go, which my AA parts and labour covered and an alternator, thats it !
Go and buy it, enjoy it !!!!

Try and get it up on the ramp and have a good look around the underside.
One thing i did notice when looking for my TVR just how many had a bad (crash )history, I HPI checked all the cars i wanted to look at, (the Mrs is in the trade so cost me nothing to do) many had been shunted and total losses, many of the owners had no idea.
I think it was because of the cost of repair was so high that so many were complete losses but many where sold and rebuilt.HPI should show up any nasty stuff.
You probably know all this anyhow but just thought i would mention it !
Hope to see a pic of it on hear at the weekend !!.
Been out in mine this afternoon, brought a big smile to my face , its seems to be getting quicker i think its because it only did 1000miles in a year with the last owner and stood for 2 months .I've done 500 in the last 3 weeks.

andy-w , yeh you are right to a point, but it depends who's repaired it , I was travelling long distances to see cars sometimes 600mile round trips in a day , so was not interested by taking a chance on possible bad jobs and two tone paint e.t.c i was brought up in the motor trade and have seen some proper nasty stuff and now i do boats and i have seen some proper nasty fibreglass repairs as well , it can affect resale value. Not all are bad but i would rather refine my search to cut out possible problems.
i did not want to scare octo just did not want him to end up with something he then will find hard to move on.Better safe than sorry, and all that.
