I like the analogy.

When you pay a very large amount of money to Ruf to do a very well engineered, almost bullet proof upgrade you are trusting that nothing will ever go wrong. In this situation, I would say that extra gauges are superfluous.

When you modify other cars, using less trusted tuners, for a smaller amount of money then it can be comforting to have an extra gauge or two to keep an eye on things should something go awry. That way you can stop pressing the loud pedal before everything melts or pistons start appearing through bodywork.

I myself will be having a wideband O2 sensor to keep an eye on the air fuel ratio as well as an auxilliary boost gauge on my modified Turbo. I do agree that too many gauges look silly, and I have chosen some discrete instruments that I hope are in keeping with the standard interior.
