Right... just need to know what combination would be better for running GT Legends etc...?

CPU: 64 Athlon 4000+
GPU: X850XT

CPU: 64 Athlon 3700+
GPU: X1800XT
(This one comes at a push)

or CPU: 64 Athlon 3500+
GPU: X1800XT

What I am trying to find out is the difference the CPU will make on the performance of the X1800XT, and how near the X850XT would come with the faster processor behind it.

If I can get the best rates with a 3500, then that's how I'll go, the cheaper the better! (Plus I can possibly add more RAM with money saved)

Thanks!
Dave.

Generally speaking, for 3D games, the graphics card is far more important than raw CPU speed. While you were struggling with 6 FPS at Brands, I was happily running at 60+ with only a 2.8GHz CPU and a 128Mb 6600GT graphics card.

As you know Dave, I was virtually the same - an OC'd 2.4 up to 2.9, and a 128Mb 6600GT.

Was getting a rock solid 50/60 fps

Defo go for the better GPU, you can always OC your CPU if you need extra speed.

Oh, and get as much RAM as you can afford.

for both responses.. quick enough!

Think I will go 3500+, then use the X1800XT..
I can upgrade RAM over time but should be able to stick 2GB in for now.

I'll take the Page file into account, as I will be able to use my old HD.. thanks for that tip, Neil!
PS. can you chuck me that Antivirus next time you are on MSN

Dave.

No worries, remember, page file to be the only thing on the drive

Expect a CD during the week - anything else you need?

What you got? You could send me a Cheque down if you like - all donations appreciated

The file can't be too big can it? Would be cheaper over MSN, but I can cover postage, the address is correct.

Be easier by cd, as its nearly 8Mb, and I can't be arsed with all that.

Means you'll get a nice pressie in the post

Pah! 8MB that's a 5minute job..

No probs, I will probably send and additional Paypal Payment soon enough but until then you will be about 50p out of pocket for the CD

Unless you have a leased line/SDSL the it won't be .

Thinking about it, I could do it another way, I'll have to have a fiddle though.

I'll get back to you

thinking I could use the server

I'm penciling a spec for upgrading my PC. I'll use the same Coolermaster case and Enermax power supply although I'll probably buy a new SATA hard disk to do the install on.

I've always gone AMD rather than Intel so was thinking of a '64.

I was going for an XT1900XT (which can be clocked to the XTX)
2-3GB RAM (I've always put lots of RAM in my PCs)
Anybody have any recommendations for top-notch motherboards.

What about suppliers? I've used overclockers, aria, scan, ebuyer and micom in the past. Any others offering good prices and decent service (only three of the above do IMO)?

Hi

You've obviously got a higher budget than me

www.eclipse-computers.co.uk is quite good... For some things eBay is worth trying to save a few quid.

I would go with an Asus board, something like the A8N-SLI Premium if you will ever consider going SLI.. even if you don't I would still go with that.. bloody good board that is!

If you go 64 then try and go for the 4000+, it has little price difference really from things like the 3500+
Or if you have a large budget go for the FX-60

Whilst I'm at it, for memory Corsair XMX is a beauty.

Dave.

I used to be clued up on these things but it's easy to lose track. Current system is

Athlon XP2600 o/c to 3000
1GB Matched pair PC3200 Corsair memory - might re-use this in the short term
Abit NF7s-Rev2 which was a favourite overclockers board, with dual channel DDR
Radeon 9800Pro
Audigy soundcard

Stood me in good stead for the last 3-4 years but is struggling on the latest games like FEAR. I've got it cranked down to about 800x600 with lots of the eye-candy switched off.

Thanks for the link. I'll have a look.

I usually spend the money on GPU, memory and hard disks and go for last months's favourite CPU.

Another question. What is the difference between the 939 and 754 pin processors? (Yes I know one has more pins!!)

Which is better?

939's are coming in now, all the Athlon 64's are 939 pin, and all the above motherboard etc.. supports 939 pin..

I would have thought it's the way forward

Although I do remember reading (tomshardware?) that the current FX60 will be the last 939 processor - AMD are meant to be changing the socket in the first half of this year. Realistically though, when was the last time you changed a cpu without changing the motherboard as well?

Re. the difference between socket 939 and 754, the 939 supports dual channel memory controllers where as the other only supports single channel(I think).

Well if i'm wrong I'm sure someone will put me right

And yes AMD are releasing a new socket some time this year. It still has 939 pins but will not be compatable with the existing socket 939. It will allow the A64's to work with faster DDR2 RAM that the Pentium Ms and 4s currently use.

Think I'll muddle on until the Autumn until I upgrade mine. I like the sound of this DDR2.

My credit card should have recovered from insuring the car and bikes by then.

Whilst everyone is here does these seem good?

AMD Athlon64 3700+ Socket 939 (Sandiago) CPU -Retail Box-
£179.95

Asus A8RMVP Sck 939,Crossfire PCI-E,SATAII,GBLan Motherboard
£68.95

HiperPower Type R 580W Modular PSU ATX2.2 - Chrome/Black
£53.95

Thermaltake Tsunami Aluminium ATX Case No PSU, Side Window
£62.95

Akasa All-In-One 21 Function Panel w/ Card Reader -Silver
£24.95

80Gb Maxtor DiamondMax DM Plus 9 S-ATAII 7200rpm Hard Drive
£35.95

Corsair XMX 1024Mb DDR400 Memory +LED Spreader
£82.95

Price is a straight £600 overall including VAT ( Bloody VAT)
Then plus graphics card which is a depressing amount, probably meaning the downgrading to a 64 3000+..
Those figure look good to you?

Dave.

Swap the diamondmax for a samsung disk because the disks from maxtor need a firmware upgrade to work with some motherboards. Also are you really sure you want an ATI card? I am a big fan but everything I have read (and I am avid reader) is that there game support is poor.
