Auto Gearbox

Has anyone built an Ultima with an autobox? Do they make transaxle autoboxes that fit the SBC? as I used to race a 4x4 range rover buggy and we used a torqueflight but it was converted to manual shift, this was on a 5 litre rover v8 with a supercharger est 400bhp. Thought it would then make it easier as you could put the shifter in the middle of the car.

A lot of Ultimas do have a centre shift. Mine included! The Getrag box is easy to go centre shift as it it cable operated. Some cars with the G50 box also are centre shift. I'm sure if you wanted to go auto there would be a box to suit. Unless you want to go drag racing why would you want an autobox?

I thought it would give the left leg a rest, and if they do make them should cheaper than a Getrag. I presume you can't have a centre gearchange for the G50.

You can but its route is not as clean and can be an issue if your engine configuration is not normal as it passes alongside the sump.

Is that still with a linkage or done with cables?

That's with a linkage but as I said the rod has to pass down the side of the engine to align itself with the centre shift so things like dry sump and the like will need careful thought.
