Being new to Cerbera ownership (had it since September) I am after some help and advice please. I have today suffered by first problem - mainly my speedo has stopped working. It will occaisonally burst into life, but then stop again. Also the mileometer and trip don't move round either (but do when it bursts into life). However the warning lights at the bottom work when first turning ignition on, so am guessing it has power still going to it OK. All other dials and electrics seem fine. Any ideas as I know very little about mechanicals, but if it is something obvious then maybe I can fix, otherwise it will mean a trip elsewhere.

FYI - car is a 1998 4.5 if it makes any difference.

Thanks

Mark

I would guess at the pulse sensor on the rear drive shaft. I think these go out of adjustment sometimes and just need a clean and setting up again.

Does it have any fuses?

Its mounted on the differential looking at the toothed wheel on the driveshaft, try removing it ( measure the gap to toothed wheel 1st) giving it a clean and refitting, if it still doens't work, try moving it a little closer typically most sensors of this sort use about a 1mmm gap to a tooth tip

Mine's just stopped working. Is this job do-able for a total numpty?

Mine packed up after trying to float during london thunder. Getting spanners to the sensor is pretty tight. Wonder whether its worth checking the connector cable tied up high between the chassis and diff. My speedo tends to get going after a long run (30 miles ish) so heat is playing a big part. Anyone know whether there's an alternative part number for the sensor?

Mine appears to be covered in crap and rubbing against the wheel.

(what about the sensor?)

It turned out that it was the actual sensor that had failed in mine and had to be replaced. Might be worth checking that it is clean though first - mine was covered in crap when it was replaced which couldn't have helped things. Getting access to it to clean is the difficult bit though - you should be OK with your pit though Mark.

Had this problem on mine and was one of those niggles I had fixed when the car went in for its service. All started when the car went swimming on the BNG last year and turned out to be dirt etc.

I noticed it would always start working after a good few miles.

My speedo / faulty sender has failed on at least 3 occassions in my 5 years of ownership. Always repaired as soon as possible, however I must have travelled at least 1000 miles in total between various fixes. With this being a common failure can you be sure of your mileage? - some previous owners may have driven thousands of miles with this fault!!!

As John said, if the mileometer is not working - leave it! Do your speed on the rev counter and enjoy the delights of driving without racking up the miles. Longer service intervals and an enhanced re-sale value. Win, win.

Except errr, it's illegal wink

Yes, but it's still awkward. Got round it with an old toothbrush, but no joy. frown

De-greaser?
