Croatia driving hols

We're planning a trip to Croatia in June. 'er indoors wants to do Dubrovnik, I'd like to see some stuff further North. Any recommendations on places to stay/avoid appreciated.

Also, looking at road maps it seems a little piece (say 5-10 miles worth) of Bosnia gets in the way and separates Croatia into North/South. Is this true and if so is it simple to drive through the border points in a rental car?
