20k car with 60k running costs. only a matter of time before there are some real unloved unmaintained sheds running round which will be worthless.

There were so many 996's made I thnk it's inevitable that prices will keep falling, simple supply and demand.
As for staying away from cheap cars, it's the old "buy on condition". A well maintained 100k mile car will be cheaper because of the psychological 100k barrier, but could be better than an unloved 70k miles car.
'99 996 C4, wife and 2 1/2 yr old. Regularly use the car for weekends away with no problem at all. Front boot is tight (but you can get a couple of squashy bags in there) but you've still got rear footwells and rear load area even if a toddler is in one seat. There is even a buggy that fits in a C4 boot - the Quinny Zap.

You can also get a buggy behind the rear seats. Get a roof rack and you can carry more than a volvo estate!! Go for it.
I have noticed Porsche are now selling a 996 Travel system(roof bars) and some odd boxter contraption, looks like someones crashed their boxter in to a climbing frame!
Why does everyone assume that kids = estate????? Something must be done to counteract this mindset. I refuse to drive an MPV!

Hmmm I thought the same. Have had porkers for years but changed marques a couple of years ago. But want another one......wow 996 looks good value but being a great believer in 'you gets what you pay for' I did a search on this forum and came up with Mr Phish' thread:

It may well make you a little bit cautious. Well it has me and it will be a Cayman or a 993 or a '73 RS now. But a 996 you must be joking. As for future deprecaiation with stories like this doing the rounds, what is an absolute cert. is that the residual value of your P and J will become something akin to a lead balloon. I mean would any sensible person buy an older one now without a Porsche warranty. Best avoided like the plague in my view.

I did, and guess what, nothing has gone bang. And by not having a warranty I'm £2250 better off already. Sure engines can go bang, but the urban myth that states every Porsche since the 993 will blow up is simply internet fantasy. If you can't afford the maintenance costs on a £60K car, don't buy one.

Tell me why it has been discussed trillions of times because its 100%? Ask Mr Phish.... Don't take it out on me mate its not my fault they keep breaking.
Patronising newcomers ain't clever, trouble is mate, I've owned these cars since the early 70s and I have had outstanding cars and raced them and to read

Wow, some dinosaurs really do have tunnel vision, there are problems with a small percentage of cars and suddenly every 996 must be a pile of poo.
I was concerned at first, but I did shed loads of research (obviously much more than dinosaur man) and have brought a 996 which I'm really happy with. There is a reasonable chance you may get an RMS leak (which can be fixed for £500+vat using the latest 997 seal) But the odds of the engine blowing are just the same as other cars.
Was it the size of their pea brains why all the dinosaurs all died off?

I was involved in the original Mr Phish dialogue, and was inclined to the view that he was Phishing for a class action.
The truth is that you can buy your 996 safe in the knowledge that for very little expense (so long as you buy wisely) you can put a very inexpensive yet comprehensive Porsche warranty onto the 996 that will cover almost everything that might ever have worried you.
With what other make can you do that ?
According to Mr Phish Porsche are losing a fortune on the deal, but I don't see them doubling the price like BMW have just done with their M series cars ....

The trouble with the internet and forums like this, is its a lot easier to complain and blow things out of proportion.
Yes, there are problems with the RMS, and yes there are alot of threads about it. But then who is actually going to start a thread titled 'I have no RMS problem' or 'I have a lovely car and nothing has gone wrong with it ever'. Hardly a conversation starter is it..
You also seem to assume that every single owner of a 996 worldwide uses these pages, and therefore the threads on RMS are giving a balanced view
