Orwells dictatorial State is inexorably coming to pass .... it really is getting time to leave this sinking ship to the asylum seekers and immigrants.
Is this legal? 
Legal maybe, but deeply sickening. How long before you can be arrested at random on the off chance you've done something naughty?
Can it tell the difference? I think not just by the colour of a strip of tape. So if anyone has been exposed to the date-rape drug they will be refused entry and left to wander the streets?
What happens to the poor bastards who've had their drinks spiked?
I know a girl who recently had hers done (by person or persons unknown), would she then be on file as a suspected drug user?
Actually I wouldn't be.
In fact hands up everyone in here who is happy to be stopped by the mafia (oh, sorry, police) and have their bio-chemisty inspected on a weekly basis.

I imagine the only people happy to be routinely subjected to this would be the insecure elderly types who get scared around todays' yoof and would do anything for a bit of social seggregation.
Sadly politicians are all too willing to pamper to the individuals like this, instead of the majority, who just want to go about their law abiding business without being criminalised by someone else's reputation.
Personally I'd refuse to do it unless they arrested me. I don't care, I have nothing to hide so arresting me would simply be a waste of their time. Once they'd done it a few times and realised I was just making a point they'd probably leave me alone.
This kind of thing is getting too much.
All this new legislation, new powers, new procedures, but never any of the old ones revoked.
It's already the case that if they want to they can nick you for something (I know, I was arrested on charge of stealing my own credit card!).

The equipment used is a £40,000 computer the size of a briefcase, funded by the Communities against Drugs Fund. A swab on the back of the hand, which is then fed into the computer, will test for ecstasy, cannabis, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines and also rohipnol, the so-called date rape drug.

No it isn't. It's time for all the decent, put upon people of this nation to make their voices heard and effect some radical change from within.

Carzee, amongst others, is fighting a campaign on the 'letter to your MP' front, but if we don't get told about these things in advance how are we meant to protest?
The second problem is that there are to many bone-idle layabouts who make it look like ther're happy to be trodden on by the government because they complain a lot on PH and never putting pen to paper to help Carzee.

The problem is often that those of us who feel trodden on lack the time to dig out evidence to support our arguments and then lack the sheer eloquence to put the point accross.
On top of this we're faced with a government that's happy to manipulate statisitcs to it's own end, then lie about those, then perform spectacular U-turns, all with impunity because they've got the 'free press' on a leash.
They will also selectively answer the call of lentil munchers where it serves their purposes by justifying a new tax on something previously taken for granted.
They'll then allow the bunny-huggers to fight the case against the free-minded amongst us while they sit back and dream up more hair-brained congestion charging schemes and new traffic offences that they can fine us for.
Eventually they will probably succeed in making cars so expensive and/or hard to live with that most people will either get banned for a momentary lapse of concentration, or simply not risk their financial well-being for a quick pootle round the block.
Someone save us. IMHO what this country needs is a benign, logical, fair-minded fascist dictator (contradiction in terms I know) to set us back on track then hand back over to democracy. Probably best if this happened every 100 years or so.

The camera's installed in houses are to try and deter / catch thiefs in an area of exceptionally high crime... and the occupier had the OPTION to choose whether or not to have one - it was NOT enforced - hardly 1984 is it?
As for the drug testing... well surely removing illegal drunks from the streets is a good thing? Reading between the lines, would suggest that you have something to hide...

Well as long as they start this new operation in and around the city pubs of central london, where the coke-frazzled suits go for their liquid lunches, and not just the pubs based in the sink estates of provincial Britain.
Oh and the many bars at the Houses of Parliament would, i'm sure, reveal all manner of drug abuse-it can be the only excuse for their behaviour.

I must profess to thinking that this is somewhat of a good idea at first glance.
Imagine a case where some poor girl has been given the date rape drug without realising, the police/doormen would then be able to highlight this to her and either look after her or wait with her until proper help arrives (eg ambulance, friends, parents whatever)
I am very anti-drugs and feel that any efforts to clamp down on their usage can only be a good thing.

Not at all - thats completely the wrong attitude to take.
Whats next on the list of things they want to check - have you had sex in the last 24 hours cos if you haven't you might be more tempted to try it on with a girl?? Can you show us your bank statement to prove that you can afford to come in here and the money in the wallet is yours.......
Sorry, but they have no excuse for testing me for anything unless they have reasonable cause to think that I have committed a crime. Fine, use this device back at the station if I've been arrested for something, but not in the street and not as I'm goin out for a beer.
We have a right to lead our lives unnmolested by the Police/Government etc unless we have clearly broken a law - this is a step in the wrong direction - a big step in the wrong direction.
Mondeoman - I'm merely trying to bring an alternative view to the thread - doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with it, or that it's my opinion.
There is a fine line between the Government / Plod being pro-active and "sticking their noses in"... people want to be safe, yet have freedom... two aspects that contradict each other.

you cannot test me without arresting me. as i understand it ( correct me if i'm wrong! ), you cannot be breath-tested unless you are displaying signs of poor car-control or whatever or are involved in an accident to which the police are called ( or leave the scene etc. ), ie there must be some suspicion that an offence has been committed.
it is not illegal to have drugs in your system is it? ( unless you are driving or operating other heavy machinery etc. )
i thought that possesion was illegal but having used was not actually an offence unless disorderly etc. again i stand to be corrected.

Joking apart, my reason for posting a link to this article is precisely what someone has now pointed out - what next? When you put all the various 'new' procedures together, and the list is L O N G, you begin to realise that both Government and the Police really don't know what they're doing. New laws which protect terrorists against instant deportation, speed cameras on every road, drug testing on the street, no prison for some burglars - geez, Xmas has come early for THEM, A moslem inciting racial hatred and codoning murder left alone, NHS going down the tube with waiting lists getting longer because they have moved people onto the waiting list for the waiting list for the waiting list etc, charging ever higher amounts for Uni education, roads snarling to a halt - often because people dare not go above 25 in case they get fined over £200 per year for the next three years (insurance increase with 3 points), asylum seekers in their droves being allowed to stay ....... oh, bollo*ks, which way is it to Pakistan, surely the country must be empty by now.

Some clarification first I feel.
I am anti hard drugs, especially heroin as I feel that from what I am told it is too addictive and can lead to social problems such as theft etc to finance an addiction.
I feel that Cannabis and Ecstacy should be legalised as it will allow the police and social services to concentrate on more problematic drugs and also that in particular ecstacy will be safer to use if it has known substances in and adive on usage.
I am not whiter than white, I took a decision early on in life to take drugs. I was smoking weed and taking LSD when I was about 14 or 15, but decided to stop after a (very) bad trip on LSD and I didn't want to get caught carrying either and messing my life up at an early age.
I do smoke and drink as well and appreciate that both of these are more damaging than some "drugs".
My support of this proposal came mostly due to being able to detect Rophynol (whatever it is called - the daterape drug) as I thought it could be used to help victims before they became true victims, however, upon rereading the article it appears that the test cannot ascertain what drug is in the system, only that one is, so it will not actually be able to help anyone.
So in that sense it is definatly a questionnable (sp?) test.
However, my opinion is just that and I would never seek to force others to agree to it. I feel a little resentful about being "up against the wall" and people making snap judgements about me based on a (granted not well worded or thought out) post.
I shall endeavour to think more carefully about what I write in future.
