Now that the kids are grown up and earning a living I am thinking about an Elise before I get too old. I am 57 and as I live in the far north of Scotland I haven't yet had a chance of a test drive. Any more mature drivers out there and how do you get on with the Elise (it will be second car probably to a Golf or Audi haven't decided yet.

I am mature ( although not quite as much as you )I also worried about how I would get in and out of it and I also worried about whether I would look silly - you know an 'old' woman driving a Lotus.
I bought an S2 in November last year and have to say that I have absolutely no regrets about getting one. It is fantastic fun and great to drive. Getting in and out is not a problem for me at all. It is my every day car.

Go For It - You only live once.

Test drive one and you will be hooked

Then dare I ask, how old are you Lorraine?? I remember my first testdrive in the Elise back in 1997 with my dad, it would be a car for him(I made him crazy to try one) he was 61? I believe at that moment and he was very healty,(he past away last year anyway)but when he tryd to get in and out I heard him complaining yep he felt he was getting old at that moment anyway that drive was also a drive for me ofcorse but he would not buy it cose it was to small/basic and the softtop to difficult and getting in and out.
I'm 43 at the moment(but looking much younger 33 or so) but I have no troubles what so ever getting in and out, and I can do it fast, we have LHD so right leg firts under the steering and same moment my ass in the seat then left leg inbaord ready

Point 1 - you're never too old

Point 2 - you'll never know unless you try it.

If you can get in and out OK you'll love it mate - wonderful car.

Oh and Lorraine, I've seen you at a PH meet and you're not a dinosaur yet by a long stretch

I am 57 I have one. Go out and get one then get some training and get it on track.
There are many older Elise owners than you.

Probably the tidiest driving I have ever seen in an elise was two chaps who post on this forum in a 135R. I don't want to guess age, but I suspect they are a few years older than I am (and I am not far off 40). Fantastic skills and they were clearly having fun. Carpe Diem - there is no age limit on having fun. As I always say to my wife when I buy a new toy - "you are never too old to enjoy your childhood".

GTRene - Do you know it's rude to ask a lady her age but it's okay I'm no lady
I have a birthday in March and I will be 47

One guy was admiring the Elise the other day and I explained that it was my mid life crisis car and he replied " Dont you mean mid - life celebration"

I liked that

I have done some training with BMW at the Nurburgring and with done Palmer at Bruntingthorpe. Do Lotus offer training themselves or is there anybody recommended ?

I could of course do another Don Palmer day with an Elise if I get one.

My father born in 1942 is my usual co-driver for lotus days (road book on open road) initially in the esprit (2001-2004) and now in the 111R.
Was with him in Francorchamps last year. He use to drive the elise but is afraid to do damage to my toy.
I do believe age is not an issue as long as the brain is open and motivated

Given the wondrful driving roads in your part of the world it would be Soooo rude not to get an Elise. Go for it. Once driven, forever smitten and you won't care what people think.

Theres a really active Scottish Elise group. A guy called 'Tut' is a very active member and is a pensioner ...drives a Honda engined Elise on track and is a legend in the Elise community !

One of the nicest things I ever saw, was up at a NYLOC meet about 3 years ago when a retired couple turned up in their red S2. The driver was still pretty agile but his wife did struggle and needed a hand getting out. They then proceeded to get her walking frame out of the boof of the Elise - it was a special fold up version.

110% top effort to them, I truly hope that when Im that age I will still be driving an Elise !(or the equivalent)

so I say go for it - youre never too old - drive it until you cant get in it no more

as for training - www.1stlotus.com is highly recommended...but a bit of a long way to go...may be worth tying it in with some other stuff whilst your down in the South East

Shnozz is a mere nipper compared to Blythy; whose lightly faded telegram from the queen, still sits atop the dash of his Elise!
