Off to Sydney for a wedding and wanted some photo tips. Obviously I'll be trying to get some shots of the bridge and the opera house (can anyone recommend a good vantage point for these?), but does anyone have any other tips re which beaches, markets, etc to visit or any car-related tips?

Also, if anyone can recommend somewhere there I can my kit cleaned professionally, that's be useful, too.

Thanks

Don

I lived in Sydney for a year or so - long time ago now.

Where you take the inevitable Opera House/Bridge shot from is Mrs Macquarie's Point which you get to by walking around Farm Cove through the Royal Botanic Gardens.

You'll get a more interesting shot if you take the Ferry over to Manly from Circular Quay (just next to the Opera House). That Ferry ride is a great value piece of tourism. You get more unusual views from "The Rocks" - which is a must to walk around anyway.

If you're there long enough I heartily recommend the Blue Mountains (walking and scenery) and also the Hunter Valley (wine region, scenery, wine, cosy hotels). If you go to the Hunter Valley stay at "Pepper's" if its still there. Great food. In the Hunter Valley drink Semillon from people like Brokenwood.

Wish I was going! Enjoy!

I spend at least 2 months a year in Sydney, and agree wtih Don, Ladies Macquaries point is a good place, if you want a great shot of the whole harbour, there is a park on Military road other in Vaucluse which has a great view.

Ferry to Manly is good, also take the ferry up the Paramata river.

Blue Mountains are good, but every time I go it rains. The hunter is good also, great wine and food. The south coast is good also, as is the roayl national park.

I am going again in April and can;t wait.

You get some of the best views from climbing the bridge but you're not allowed to take a camera in case you drop it on the traffic below...

Plenty of interesting urban life around The Rocks and the Botanical Gardens are good too.

I was in Sydney for a couple of nights last November. This is the view from Mrs Macquarie's Point, but not right at the end or you get a block of flats in the distance looking like it's holding up the bridge. Had to wait for the lights on the opera house to come on which was about 8p.m.

It's popular so you may have to get in the que

SlimJ posted another nice view on this thread: www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=229296

There is an elevated railway that runs just behind circular quay. Apparently, if you get up there you can get a shot of the Quay, Opera house on right and bridge on the left. You may have to buy a train ticket. I didn't have time myself. Another good view is from the zoo, but again I didn't have time so can't vouch for it. I echo the thoughts about the Blue Mountains and Manly ferry, worth the trip but I didn't have the weather either.

That railway goes to the airport, among other places, so keep your camera out if that's how you're getting there.

Thanks for the tips. Have previously been to the Blue Mountains and Hunter Valley (but only spent about 1 1/2 days in Sydney). This time we're spending about 5-6 days in Sydney.

Did the Bridge Climb last time and whilst the views were impressive, wouldn't recommend it - too much fannying around "learning" how to walk up stairs for my liking.
