Got this pc off my brother some time ago. Last night i did a format of the C drive and reloaded Win 98se on it as it was such a mess with years of rubbish being loaded onto it.

The pc is better than mine with a DVD drive, pentium 3 as apposed to 2, tv antenna connection at the back etc etc.

The install went well and even getting on line apart from one thing. I have a proview flat monitor which is plug and play. Windows found drivers for it immediately. But when you try and change the settings on windows for resolution etc it is stuck with 2 or 16 colours as opposed to 256, 32bit etc. Also i am on the lowest res of 600 by something. The slide bar is stuck and every attempt to change the adapter for the display fails.
It says Display - AY765 ( i think that's the monitor ) on standard PCI graphics adapter (VGA).
My own pc says Rage ATI .
Is it just a case of finding the right drivers on line for the graphics card? although i have opebed it up and don't know what graphics card it is or which board it is to look.

Also when i go into systen tools/system information/components/display...it says that the drivers have not been loaded for several PCI applications with no mention of a graphics card apart from 'standard PCI graphics adapter'.

Would buying a sub£100 card and installing along with provided drivers fix the problem?
It's a nice Hewlett packard pc and as i said, better than mine so a shame not to use it. Plus it.

I don't want to take it to pc world ( extremely bad experience's in the past ).

Any suggestions please>
Thanks

You're not Gary Glitter are you?

Serious now....

Well, the easiest thing to do is whip the card out, and try and ascertain what manufacturer it is / what card is it? Once you have this you can go to the manufacturers website and download the appropriate drivers for it.

Failing that for around 40 sheets you can buy yourself a brand new PCI card complete with drivers. Its up to you.

HTH,
Greg

There may have been some leggy blondes on my pc but they were all over 20 years old me lud
I looked for on all the green boards to see if i could see which was the graphics card. How do i tell?
I can go online with it so downloading the drivers is not a problem if that is the problem. Finding the damn card in the first place is more of an issue. Iv'e only got this far through years of destroying my own pc's

It'll be the one you plug the monitor into!

Its the one the monitor cable is plugged in to.....what you're looking for is the main chip on the board....it will say something like ATI or NVidia - then a number - this will give you the graphics card detail you need.

if it has an intergrated video card look for the main number stamped on the board and search for that on google to find the manufacturer and you should be able to work out what video card it is

Thanks for your help all.

Make sure you clean off all the gunk and re-attach the fan using some new thermal paste. Don't want to go frying that card now that you've discovered what it is...

Downloaded the driver and ...Setup does can not find any Nvidia chips on this computer

Went into find files to look up nvidia and found a file with setup in it. Install sheild runs then the same message that i don't have any nvidia chips.

Any suggestions please?
Ps, i made sure i pushed the fan back on with its clips and pushed the whole thing home before putting the screw in.
Maybe the card is fried anyway before i got it?, that's all i can think of.

After work i may try and put the rage card in from my other pc then download the driver.
Could it be that the dvd player has something to do with it?

Unlikely, the TNT2 is quite an old card are you sure you downloaded the correct drivers?

If you look on the column to the left on the driver download window there is an archive of older versions of the driver, may be worthwhile downloading an older version as those newer ones may have not considered the older hardware for testing as much.

Indeed.

From here: www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_archive.html

I'd download the 28.32 version and give that a go?

It certainly says it supports the TNT2 chipset.

Its not related to your DVD player, cross that out.

If you've no luck there, maybe try here....

You'll need to sign up to download it, but it's free and the driver is supposed to be for Win9x. Oh, and the page seems to take a while to load but it does eventually appear.....honest.
