If somebody armed with my registration number decided to find out who I was, how easy would this be?

If say this someone happened to have a friend in the police, would it be ok for them just to go ahead and get the data for them?

I'd like to think that such data is classified and requests for it would be logged by DVLA. I'd also like to think that police supplying people with this data willy-nilly would be reprimanded.

Am I right?

Very easy, the DVLA dish it out for a small fee providing you have reasonable grounds...

IIRC the PNC checks by the police are monitored, by brother in law (officer in Met) told me if he was caught looking stuff up without a valid reason, he could get a bollocking

I once backed out of a deal to buy a used car, escaping a flurry of threats and abuse as I drove away in my girlfriend's car. The ex-soon-to-be-vendors made a note of the registration. 6 weeks later it's stolen and found torched 1 mile away (hardly a 'joy ride'). No similar incidents before or since in that neighbourhood. Made me wonder the same thing...

It's a long story but there's a chance some disgruntled party is checking me out. I've nothing (much!) to hide but it could cause slight inconvenience...

Good job DVLA don't run my bank account isn't it with that sort of slapdash security on private information.

They do realise this is a problem though...

Probably not a lot of solace to you at the moment though.

£2.50 per check at the moment I think - you just need to put down some sort of reason why you require details. I don't know how rigorously these requests are screened though.

Correct.

Slightly more than that, possible criminal charges, and/or dismissal from the service...

Misuse of the PNC by police officers or anyone else for that matter within the Police service is a criminal and sackable offence under the DATA protection Acts. No Bib in his/her right mind would risk doing that. Checks are logged against each officers shoulder number when they do them. It is not difficult to find out who did it and when!

In my former incarnation as Trafpol, due to the amount of PNC checks I carried out, I would get regularly dip sampled (it really smarts without lubricant...) on the checks I had conducted.

Not worth losing your job over/going to prison for... Only ever done legitimate ones.
