Can it boot from the CD? If it can, do a parallel installation, recover your data across the network and then nuke it. You can also run a repair on your existing installation from CD... You can boot to Knoppix and see what's left on the disk etc.

Any idea what caused the corruption and what eror messages are you getting at boot time?

Will it boot in safe mode?

That should keep you going for a while

For any connection to work you will need to be able to 'boot' the laptop. You can do this from a bootable CD/USB Flash drive/floppy. See the NU2 website for details of the Bart PE disk - www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/. You should be able to delete files directly without connectig to another PC.

However that may be too complex. What do you want to delete and why? It may be simpler to reformat, reinstall OS and applications.

convertor might work..

hard drive is buggered as chkdsk gets to 44% and gives up so cant do parrell install.

have used hariens boot cd whatever that is that lets you recover files and u can put them on a floppy but it wont recog a mem stick ( theres lots of large officey files on it ).

will try to find a recovery prog for normal dos or xp

You need this kind of thing

Or one of these

I got one when similar happened a few weeks ago, popped lappie disk in and copied files, then format and fresh install. Easy peasy and saves opening up the desktop.

Serial cable or similar pc to pc would not work I imagine without both being able to boot up first.

That's normal... Run it through a few times and it should carry on and fix it. Each time it goes a few percent more. Not figured out why it does that yet, but it sure does. Fixed loads of supposedly duff HDD's to get data off using that technique. I think it's called being bloody stubborn
