I'm just about to go and get my second front number plate!! Anyone got any suggestions for fixing - already tried halfords stick on doubled sided 6 and 2mm stuff - and tried self tapping screws - must have come undone?? Unless someones nicked it but then why not take the rear one aswell!?

B&Q double sided tape roll

Get as much of the old stuff off as you can (particularly the foam bits) put lots of tape on the black plastic plinth then peel off all the backing and press the plate on, make sure it hangs about 5mm or so over the bottom of the plinth to act as an early warning device.

Velcro!

Wont damage your car if you catch it on a speed bump. Also, gives you a second (or third) chance if you stick it on wonky!

£3 from Halfords for the stuff that holds 25kg.

Extra strong velcro also available from Homebase, but

a. dont buy the white stuff
b. If you buy a roll, cut and stick 2 seperate left and right sections ... if one side comes loose the other side will hold.

Don't rule out that they've been stolen. The thief may have been disturbed and not had time to take the rear one as well. Numberplate theft is quite common (thiefs steal numbers of a car like theirs in colour and model and then they can speed everywhere and you get the fines), but I would like to think that a fellow Elise owner wouldn't do such a thing.

Double ding. Clean both the surfaces carefully with alcohol first to get a completely clean surface, then stick on. Hans' technique works well. I have 3 strips on mine (no plinth though) and it holds well with a full size, 3/4 or tiny plate.

I gave up after about my 10th plate!
Now I just don't have a plate and if somebody asks I'd say it just fell off/broke/dissappeared.
Been without a plate for the past 6 months and nobody has asked me anything!

or just buy a stick up plastic numberplate that excatly fits the size of your space in the clam(origenal space) its a bit elegal, but also have the good plate in the car and explain the officer who holds you your problem? I would do it that way I hate those big lumpy drag catchers...just go for a nice venyl plate and the real plate in the trunk! no more stealing or loose bolds or what so ever, only a clean smooth surface

I keep the front plate in the cabin and, if stopped, will politely explain that it's just been knocked off. I've driven past numerous trafpol cars and none of them have given me a second glance.

Cheers guys... just got one made up and they gave me more self tappers... if it falls off again i'll just leave it off as suggested - look better anyways!! Also I got my plate printed J2EUB with the spacing the same and the 'slightly' altered so it reads more like REUB - nothing major and still clearly reads J2 EUB on thr right size plate with the right size letters/numbers... anyone else got cherished plate with slight mod???

My new plate is a 12inch by 3 inch. It is dinky and about the size of the area on the clam that you fix the plate to. So far (touch wood, massage grain) I have had no problems with the police. The only noticable problem is most forecourts have a numberplate recognition system before you can fill up. It now takes ages for the pump to start!

Interesting. I've not noticed any problems since I've had my car, sans front number plate. Maybe I should start reversing in
