Just to show how contrary I am, I'm now going to ask what the top speed of a 111S is in real-world conditions? I mean like on an Autobahn, but without destroying all the nerves in my posterior and without 400 miles of free road ahead of me.

I know I said I didn't care, and really, I don't, I just have a few motorway miles to do in September in France and want to know how the Elise would handle them.

143 out of my S2 Exige (at Bruntingthorpe). That was in 5th but the car had virtually stopped accelarating.

I would say a 111s would be similar as while it has less power it doesnt have spoilers and splitters creating as much downforce and therefore drag.

No reason why you shouldn't see in the neighborhood of 130mph.

In fact the taller gearing in a standard S1 means 130mph is quite achievable.

I've had 149 Mph out of my previous R, this wasn't on the road and was a very accurate figure, like what Dave's already put think you'd be hard pushed to get a Toyota engined card over 160 mph there so light that it's a real job to keep the thing stable at max speed

Obviously 160 mph wouldn't be a standard car

If its an S2 111S your in, with the roof on the best I have managed is 125mph (verified by road angel) on the Bedford back straight and thats sitting at 125 for some time with foot flat to the floor and no perceptible increase. I'm sure with a bunch of motorway miles you can ease up some more MPH.

Edit to say but without a great setup (rake, good springs and 195 front tyres) your nerves *will* be shot twitching around at that speed. Cruising at 95 to 105 would be fine.

90-100mph is a fair comfortable cruising speed in a 111S (or any Elise really)...I think about 125-135mph max is about right depending on conditions/passenger/roof on or off etc

It can be quite tiring cruising roof off at those speeds - i always wear ear plugs on long journeys at high speed with the roof off which help a lot with the wind noise.

As mentioned above - the car will be a lot more stable if you have some rake - say 10mm front to rear, and a decent geo setting...I can take my hands off the wheel no probs at 150mph ...seen 169mph on the GPS on the continent last year...which is pretty noisy with the roof off !

Cheers guys, I have to say that's a little lower than I expected. I thought the 111R with hard top would be about 150mph, 111S with hard top about 140mph and the Exige, with all those stick on plastic bits () about 135mph.

Still, I expect it'll be enough to get through the motorway miles quickly. Just have to move and buy one by the end of June now

Of course sitting in my Audi at 155 mph (where legal) for hours on end is effortless but really, really dull*.

* Unless you find stationary traffic round a corner and have to swing over to use the hard sholder to stop in**

It is really not going to matter - an elise at top speed really feels quick. With a hard top on, the drag coefficient is dramatically reduced vs roof off. Would be around 135 or so. You will get to those speeds so rarely it is hardly worth worrying about it. My old M3 was derestricted and had exhaust and engine management mods. Comfortable 290 km/hr on the clock. I didn't buy another because it would a) lose you your licence in the UK b) So little opportunity to do it, it would be wasted. When you are in top gear in an elise, you are not having as much fun. Put a N/A honda in and you will get 160 mph. You will probably lose the soft top though.

The 143 I did at Bruntinthorpe (same speed for about 10 runs) felt absolutely rock solid. The downforce at that speed is really noticeable.

Have to say though that straight line speed is quite boring. At Bruntingthorpe after the straight there is a long sweeping bend that the Exige can take at 130 which tends to completely sh1t up the 360 / 911 owners in the passenger seat
